That's the upstate perception.
But I think part of what feeds that is the negative impression New Yorkers have with public universities in general. It never failed to astound me how native New Yorkers (including upstaters) would choose a mediocre private school over a decent public school, just to be able to say they got a private school education.
SUNY Buffalo is a good university. I don't know how selective they are, but they they have a law school, a med school and all the other graduate programs mentioned here (which makes SUNY Buffalo more of a Big Ten-style school than any other MAC school).
Also, SUNY Buffalo made the U.S. News best national universities list -- ranking in the neighborhood of Ohio U., Oklahoma, Oregon, Kentucky, South Carolina or Utah. (Binghamton and Stony Brook rate a bit higher).
