Anyways, please don't get bitter towards the university, fans, players, or coaches because of this "fan" of OU. That is all I ask of you....

I thought elementary school started already. Didn't think calisooner would have a lot of free time on his hands.

LOL! Remeber when you snapped a wagon wheel or axel and you could either repair it or replace it if you had a spare? Those were the complexities of video gaming at its finest.

I also remember a game where you had to find Dr. Livingston. and there was a sled dog spin off of the oregon trail.... and I think I remember one where you were a fish in a lake, and you had to decide whether to eat, run from, or swim by other fish/anglers...

But now, if it ain't an MMORPG, or made by Blizzard Ent., it just isnt fun anymore (with some exceptions obviously)

OMG Dayon's! I was just talking about Oregon Trail on the Apple IIe with a friend of mine the other day. That game was the bomb, played it every time we had the chance.

I especially love how Jeff is just tossed in casually as a loss with your wagon wheel & some food! :)

With all the newfangled graphics and everything else, there are still very few computer games that are as much fun as Oregon Trail was. I have a nice computer that is quite capable of playing the best games on the market, but there isn't a single game out there that makes me want to buy it right now. Computer gaming is pretty much dead anymore. I still play video games on my PS2, and they're great, but computer gaming seems to have went the way of the dinosaur.

The games that I do look forward to, like Doom3, end up being major disappointments.

Considering I hate WarCraft, StarCraft, Diablo, and every other game by Blizzard, I think I will remain the skeptic.

When it came to RTS I was a C&C guy, although the newer iterations of that game have been far less compelling as well.

How can you dislike any Blizzard pro duct? That liek saying that curing smallpox was a bad idea. WarCraft 2 is possibly the best RTS ever. and the World of WarCraft beta is better than most games that are on the shelves now.

Dunno, I just never got into the fantasy realm of WarCraft. I much prefer Age of Empires for the building through time or Command & Conquer for the futuristic warfare.

We have Age of Empires and my ten-year old and I both enjoy it. I took like the "build your world" type games. My son is asking for "Age of Mythology" for his upcoming birthday. Know anything about that game? Is it worthwhile? Thanks

Actually, Age of Mythology is one of the last computer games I bought, back when it first came out. If you like Age of Empires you will really like Age of Mythology. However, if you are played out of Age of Empires you will likely not get much new from Mythology. It is essentially the same game as Empires with a few new twists. The first twist you'll notice is that you now have only 3 races to choose from: Greek, Egyptian, and Norse. Each of those then has 3 major gods to choose from. The races have obvious strengths, and the gods you choose give you "god powers" that you can use when you raise through the levels, and also tweak your abilities.

As you get into the game you'll also notice a new "resource" that you must gather. I haven't played the game in quite awhile, so I don't remember the actual name of this resource, but its like a mythology point or something. The way you get those is different for the races. I think Greeks have to have villagers pray at a temple, Egyptians get it through building monuments, and Norse get it through killing people.

That resource comes into play when you want to create the new units in the game. The new ones are mythological creatures and heros. Which sets up a good offsetting power balance. Essentially Mythological Creatures can devastate normal units; heroes are lethal against Mythological Creatures; regular units are effective against hero units. This requires a lot of micromanaging within a battle to get the matchups that suit your units best. Of course there are the other mismatches still that are set up in Empires that bow weapons are best against cavalry, cavalry are best against walking units, and walking units are best against archers. Essentially it just takes the mismatch system a level further for a more in depth game. There are other quirks like you're only allowed one of each hero unit at a time (Because there was only one Achilles, right?).

I, personally, loved this game. It had the greatness of AoE building up through the ages and advancing in technology. It also added in mythology, which I was a huge fan of Greek Mythology when I was younger. The game isn't exactly new any more and I have to imagine that you'd get a good price on it if you looked for it now. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it at all if you like Empires. I think the only thing to be wary of is it is a very similar gameplay model as Empires, so if you are looking for something new because you're bored of Empires you may not like it. If you're looking for Empires with a great new twist, jump all over it because it is fantastic. Oh yeah, it was, I believe, the first RTS to have fully 3D rendered units & environments, so the graphics are outstanding!

Writing about this game has made me think about plugging it in when I get home :)

I laughed for a very long time when I saw the Oregon Trail reference. That game must have been standard issue with all computer labs back in the day. I used to camp out and hunt for food for what seemed like hours. Loved  that game! My school also had a game where you'd run for president and have to go through the primaries to get the nomination. I can't remember the name of the game but I do remember that game being fun. Them bastards, I didn't realize I was learning about the American politacal system while having fun. Just like that Where in the USA/World/Hell game staring that seductress Carmen Sandiego. Good memories, Gumshoes! You're on the right track.....

It is essentially the same game as Age of Empires, but at the same time its not. It has the same concept and basic "plot" if you will, but it is a much better game.

The new 'resource' is called favor(of the Gods) and you need this to build myth units, such a minotaurs, hydras, medusa, nemian lions, Manticores, hill giants... you name it from Norse/egyptian/greek mythology, you cna make it. Each race gains it by different ways liek hammb said, greek by praying, egyptians by building monuments, and norse by fighting. The campaigns are really good for this game too.

The expansion pack is worth the extra $20 too. You can call forth the Titans to fight for you, which are basically giants that take up a third of the screen and are all but invincible.

You get God powers too in Age of myth. as hammb said, you "worship" a new god each age advancement, rather than straight advancement, so you can follow different paths, that determine which myth creature you can create, as well as what powers you get. Things such as hades underground passage, ceasefire so no one can attack, effects that help you gather various resources faster, even a lighting bolt power good to destroy ANY one unit.

All and all its quite great. The graphics are superb and by now the cost is very reasonable. Your child would definatly enjoy it.

Aren't we supposed to be ripping on that dickhead Calisooner, not talking about video games on this thread?
