In Omar and Vince Young's case, you may be right. But for a QB that is short or can gain more velocity or accuracy with a better release, of course it is relevant.Anyone that is complaining about Young or Omar's throwing motion they should shut up. Throwing motion is irrelevant, it's the results that count. The only mechanics that really matter are the footwork...properly stepping into the throws and not falling back or what have you.
ESPN Insider info on Jacobs
I have only seen Cutler once and that was in the Swamp this year. He almost took a lousy team to the upset. He went down the field over and over again on that defense. He was pretty impressive.hammb wrote:I'm really anxious for the senior bowl, because I honestly know nothing of Jay Cutler, except he's supposedly all that. I'd barely ever heard of him, until people start saying he's the 2nd best senior QB. The info I can find says he's a physical specimen with all the tools and also had the great leadership and intangibles that you like to see. However, he played on a bad Vandy team.

Much like a baseball swing a release should not be tampered with...leave what works alone.
Poor throwing motion can result in more injuries and less velocity, thats why they care.

I haven't heard a scout say that they worry about his motion. I've seen it in writeups pre-draft and I've seen it for plenty of other prospects, but it usually doesn't seem to effect their draft status on draft day.Germainfitch1 wrote: You want the NFL Scouts to shut up?

Velocity has as much to do with footwork as it does release. Look at baseball; there are plenty of people who throw with good velocity with all sorts of different release points. Power comes from the abs and legs as much as it does the arm.
As for injuries I don't think I've ever seen anything definitive that players with one release style get hurt more than others. If anything I'd think you'd be better off not forcing them into some new motion when they are used to do what was natural to them.
I really don't see the release as being a big deal, especially from guys as tall as Vince & Omar. Even with the lower release point they shouldn't have too much problem getting the ball over the line. So long as the ball gets to its target it shouldn't matter how it gets there.

A couple of players come to mind while reading the latter parts of this thread , and they are both Brownies.
People are talking about Cutler in the same way they were talking about Charlie Frye last year. Sure Frye wasn't a top 10 pick, but it is a very similar situation.
As to poor mechanics Bernie Kosar had a horrible side arm delivery but he hooked up with Webster Slaughter and Ozzie Newsome a few times.

I'll be curious to see where Omar actually measures at the combine. I do believe he'll stay a lot closer to his listed height. It wasn't a real shocker to most of us that he shrunk...he was actually below 6'1. I think it was pretty clear when they were on the sidelines together that Omar was considerably taller than Josh was. I expect that he'll measure at 6'3 or better...if he doesn't it will really hurt his draft stock.FalconKing wrote:Anyone else notice how our QBs seem to keep shrinking? I can't really agree with this comment. Cutler has been compared to Brett Farve. Scrappy player with strong leadership skills that has a howitzer for an arm. Also he player on the worst team in a very strong conference, and you could say single handedly got the team a huge upset win, and close games against other superior opponents. He also used to run a option-type offense in his younger years, so his mobility and toughness are superb. He dosn't compare to Frye much at all in his skills set or situation.Dayons_Den wrote:

Yeah, I have noticed that too. Also, I see that Turner and Barnes are both listed at 6-2 and neither guy looked that tall to me. Maybe they are, I've never stood next to them, but I have a picture I took of Jacobs, Turner and Barnes all standing next to each other at the Ball State game, and Jacobs looks like he towers above Turner, and Turner looks taller than Barnes. So who knows.FalconKing wrote:Anyone else notice how our QBs seem to keep shrinking? We had Harris listed as 6'3", but when he got to the combines, he was suddenly 6'1". GO BG!!!
I'll see if I can find some old draft writeups but Frye was compared to Favre a LOT last year. In fact there were a TON of mocks that had him going to GB in Rd. 1 because of the similarity. Frye is a lot like Favre but doesn't have the cannon arm. Do not under estimate Frye's mobility...he's displayed it numerous times throughout his rookie year. He actually ran a better 40 time than Harris did coming out of college as well.saves wrote:I can't really agree with this comment. Cutler has been compared to Brett Farve. I cannot speak to the comparison of Cutler to Frye, but I think a lot of it is good player on bad team. Frye was a great QB on some really bad Akron teams...I think the comparison is there for Cutler as well.

Thats exactly it, hammb. I wasn't comparing Frye and Cutler's intangibles because to be honest with you I have only seen Cutler during that Florida game and I was drinking heavily in a bar following the big BG win over Kent State.hammb wrote:I cannot speak to the comparison of Cutler to Frye, but I think a lot of it is good player on bad team. What I meant was they are getting the same mentions IE sleeper QB's that were the only good players on their team. Frey led his team to a victory over Marshall but they weren't a good team in his previous years.
