I've never been to ND, but I have read numerous, numerous stories about their arena. It is supposed to be THE mecca for college hockey. Every seat in the place is a leatherbound, cedar (or is it maple?) swivle seat. I also recall reading an article a few years back in which ND's hockey coach is their coach was quoted as stating that as it was being built he would bring recruits in to where center ice would be and that they would then look around and commit on the spot. ND, for those of you that don't know, has a very, very good hockey tradition and program.

Personally, as cool as I think this is, and as much as I want to get there to see just one game in my lifetime, I don't think there is any university in the country that should follow ND's model. There are few universities in the country, after all, that are in the situation that ND is. Hockey is king in ND. They are too close to Canadia for it not to be, eh? They are the state university for a state that most people in the U.S. hardly consider to be a state. ND's arena is one of the shining stars in the state of North Dakota. Honestly, on a relative level, I can not think of anything in any other state that might compare to it. Looking overseas, ND's arena is their Taj Mahal, their Parthenon, their La Cathedral. No other university in the country can even contemplate doing what UND did, because no other university could justify it.

I really don't know how I am positively contributing to this conversation, but I thought that I would throw in my knowledge of the UND situation.

I will say, however, that I think UT would be a bunch of idiots if they did not combine their construction program with the City of Toledo's program. Believe me, I f-ing hate Toledo and just about everything that they do; however, the fact of the matter is that UT is in a very different situation than BGSU is with the state of their basketball facility. Due to the municipal restrictions of Bowling Green, BGSU is responsible for building their own facilities, and that is great! Many universities are in the same situation.

The fact of the matter is that UT, a university that is hurting for cash to say the least, has an opportunity to not only decrease their costs by joining with the City of Toledo to build an areana, but also to increase their fanbase. I believe that if UT's basketball games weren't buried on the very far west side of Toledo (campus), there would be much more interest in UT basketball throughout the city. Also, people love beer - that is a fact. If UT basketball games were off campus there would be no reason that beer could not be sold at games, and that would only mean more revenue for both the city and the university.

Again, I hate Toledo, and I hate making sense on their behalf. I guess I am just dumbfounded by the apparent disconnect between the city administration and the university that bears the city's name. Given the national exposure that the university gives the beleagured city, one might assume that the city administrators would be on their knees to please the university. They apparently are not, and one is forced to wonder why...

Wow. I just realized that this post was made in the football forum. As I was typing most of it, I was thinking of a current thread in the basketball forum. My appolgies if I confused anyone - I am extremely tired. For the 20 mintues that post took, I hope it makes some semblance of sense.

FWIW, ESPN had a short story on today that says that Pickens admits he knows "little" about football, but wants a say in selection of head coach and asst. coaches etc..... gist of it was....is it worth the 150Mil to deal with this?

Are we sure this is for the Sebo SAC, or is the Athletic Dept. just putting in a few rows of corn?

I think the ground was broken so BG could add a second tree. Didn't want to disappoint. (Cue Falcon response "But you did!")

Just a couple of thoughts on that. You are correct that the city wants UT to use a downtown facility but it appeared that city wanted to do the leveraging, which doesn't work in this case. Toledo alumni have very different opinions from yours and the UT administration got heavy pressure from alumni to keep the facility on campus. Very few people think that a fan base would be increased by a move downtown. Winning consistently will improve the fan base. You do have a point about the beer, but the arena used to fill up when the teams were winning and no beer was sold. The on-campus facility will have much, much more than a basketball arena and they won't have to fight with the city when trying to schedule games and other events. It will surely cost them more, but the benefits apparently outweigh the costs.
UT is listed in the 2004 edition of The Unofficial, Unbiased Guide to the 328 Most Interesting Colleges by Trent Anderson and Seppy Basili as one of the U.S. schools with the “Most Beautiful Urban Campus.”

Actually what you're seeing being done right now is just the preparation as we get ready to lay the new underground sprinkler system for the football field. We'll get to the Sebo construction after we finish this more important task.
