The spring of my sophomore year, I was convicted of disorderly conduct off campus when police busted up an off campus party. The summer before my senior year, I was arrested (and later convicted) of drunken driving within sight of campus by campus police -- a much more serious offense than the allegations now facing Turner or Patrick.Schadenfreude wrote:I really don't mean to be argumentative. I don't share your assumption. I don't know the BGSU diciplinary procedures, in part because I never went through them. The office of campus involvement and most orgnanizations require their membership to be in "good standing" with the university. These events would not put you in good standing, to say the least.
The papers say Turner may go on probation of some kind. My strong hunch: That's still good standing.
Seems to me the "good standing" rule is simply about defining who is and who isn't a BGSU student.
I don't see anything preventing A.T. from running for (or being appointed) USG senator right now, if he had any interest.
Yes, it is a bigger story because the young men are football players, but most students would be removed from there leadership positions on campus.
Neither incident triggered campus disciplinary procedures (and I'm guessing that's because neither occurred on campus). Neither had any effect on my leadership positions at the student newspaper. Neither had any impact on my academic full ride.

Things have changed abit on campus since you may have gone to school. If you are charged with a crime off campus, you will also go through the university discipline procedures in addition to whatever happens to you in court. For example, some studnets were arreseted in Columbus after a OSU game for their "festivities" and they went through the university discipline, as would those on Spring break if the university was aware of it.
If you are on probation, you are not in "Good Standing" It is not who and who isn't a student. Anyone who is on probation, etc.. is not in good standing, discipline-wise, with the university.
And while I don't doubt that you may have seen people engage in this behavior, I am simply saying that if most students who are leadership positions were in a similar situation, they would probably be removed from their positions
