Re: Coaching Carousel
You think Sean Lewis is a package deal with Babers? If not, I wouldn't mind it if Kingston hired him to be the next HC. The players seem to love him and he did a great job this year after our OCs left for Tulsa. That'd give us some sense of stability going forward. Plus he'd score a lot of points with the players for staying instead of going with Babers.
Re: Coaching Carousel
Same age as Campbell when he took over. It is not unprecedented. And both Campbell and Fleck are hailed for their youth appeal. Now is he head coach material? No telling, I know little about the guy.zete wrote:he is 29 years old -- please

Rod Carey -- He is currently the head football coach at Northern Illinois University. Formerly co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach under Dave Doeren, he was promoted to head coach after Doeren left to accept the job at North Carolina State prior to the school's biggest game in history - the Orange Bowl.FalconTurf wrote:Imagine if our Falcons would have run the table going into the MACC with a shot at a New Year's Day bowl game. The greatest season in Falcon history ending with an interm coach and a distracted staff looking at new jobs, new houses and leaving the team with little chance to match up against their toughest opponent of the year. It becomes tougher to be a college football fan.
Fans were irate that such a thing could happen - but it did.... and will continue to happen. There are no movements to do anything about it as far as I know.

Answer to flipper about basketball. Yes commits will decommit I agree however not only did we have a high scale of these but we also lost a couple and had several ask for a leave and granted to come back. A complete revolving door. Huger was trying to get a team I believe into July. Had to get some jc players but the team is trying to learn hugers system let alone learn how each other plays. I've listened to a few of hugers post game audios and he talks about this.
Re: Coaching Carousel
Firstly, I did not expect Babers to coach the bowl game, because the system is such that coaches bolt before the bowls.Flipper wrote:NFL doesn't have recruiting like the NCAA. It behooves these schools to get their guy when they can get him. Would it be better to have Babers here for the title game? Of course... but that's not how it works these days. Realistically... did anyone think he'd be our HC for our bowl game?
Secondly, I understand the differences between NCAA and NFL and I also understand the impact it can have on recruiting to make schools conducting a coaching search to wait for other teams to finish their seasons. I also don't give a rat's ass about those schools.
The current system is set up to favor the teams that are searching for a new coach...allowing them to poach coaches that still have work to do in their current job. I think a system that is set up to favor the teams that did a good job and hired a competent coach that earned a bowl game would be vastly more fair and preferable.
We all know that the real reason this system is allowed is because it continually screws over teams like BG & UT that put together good, bowl bound, seasons; while it benefits the P5 schools looking for the next coach.
As far as I'm concerned taking a serious hit in your recruiting is a price to pay for firing a coach. The sport, as a whole, is worse off when we have a billion bowl games being played by teams that no longer have a coach.
Re: Coaching Carousel
I've always thought the NCAA should push national signing day back to March and thus dictate that ADs can only contact coaches after their entire season is complete, including post-season. But so long as the Ole Misses and Penn States of the world benefit by the current system, it will not change.

Easiest way to fix all this is to make December a dead period.

The basketball situation was ridiculous... so much BS and hysterics. You'd like to avoid that here, but the way this process is playing out, I doubt it.

Re: Coaching Carousel
The system clearly benefits more then just the power five, as UCF is not a Power 5 school. I'm sure if we ever fired our coach midseason we could do to a Sun Belt or FCS school what is being done to us.
I agree that something should be done to change this, but UCF being the school Babers is going to shows that a group of 5 school can use the system to help themselves too

That's not realistic... no hiring during championship week, perhaps?Falcon137 wrote:Easiest way to fix all this is to make December a dead period.

Re: Coaching Carousel
UCF is a P5 school in name only. Huge student population, 45k stadium that they could add 20k to and they're in Orlando. You'd think the Big 12 would move on that. With so many TV' sand transplanted midwesteners down there, the B1G and their cable network would be a great fit.

Yeah, exactly. He's obviously gotta be good enough for the job, but I think his youthfulness could be an upside.MarkL wrote:Same age as Campbell when he took over. It is not unprecedented. WMU working on a deal for Fleck that will rival Power 5 jobs....where in the hell is the money coming from?

Re: Coaching Carousel
College football, especially FCS schools, needs someone such as a PJ Fleck to come on board for period of time (such as vintage Marshall star power) and make it fun again. So many of these guys come in masquerading as having the program's interest at the top of their list. When behind closed doors, the mind set is short term winning & then leaving ASAP. It has become the norm not only in the Mid-Am, but most everywhere. Is it paranoia that has them walking a red coal carpet? The cycle seems to have evolved over the last forty years and as is the case with many of the MAC schools it usually adds up to NOTHING - little momentum, pathetic fan base, apathetic students & a general disinterest; and more frequently The Headless Horseman leading a team to a bowl game. A revolving door of coaches coming and going coming and going. A vicious cycle having gone on for years adding up to: 'it is what it is'.Falcon137 wrote:WMU working on a deal for Fleck that will rival Power 5 jobs....where in the hell is the money coming from?

Nice to see WMU is getting somewhere. They improved throughout the season and beat Campbell in the end. Matt was thinking about making that plane, as his kids went down.
