The 3 big away games should also produce more than enough money for Brandon's measly buyout.factman wrote:To start, he could have kept Boise on the schedule and that game would have brought in a LOT more $$$$ than WKU!!! Maybe that would help with the budget.

Fine, I'm done with this thread. If you want to cry about who we should have been playing and why this will not be a good year because of the teams on the schedule go right ahead. This board gets closer and closer each day to boards from bigger schools. WAAAAAA, we didn't get this game or that. WWAAAAAA, it's all the new AD who hasn't been here a full years fault. WWWAAAA lets fire him and everyone else who is not winning. WWWAAAAA we didn't get our way. I feel like I am on an OSU or UM board. Spring game is approaching fast and the season is right around the corner. I can't wait to see who we play. I don't care who, just as long as we improve over last season. Am I disappointed, yes. Can I change this years schedule, no. It is time to move on and get back to what Falcon fans do best which is supporting their team through thick and thin, HELL YES! It's a whole new year, bring it on.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that someone in the athletic department (and, potentially, many people) keep an eye on this site to get a sense of what people are saying.JoeFalcon wrote:I'm talking about face to face, sit-down meetings held on a regular basis. And that's the thing with Western Kentucky. It's good at what it does, but it has virtually no graduate programs, and in that sense isn't really of the same academic profile as the typical MAC university.1987alum wrote:Remember, as Schadenfreude often points out, it is the university presidents that make these decisions, not the athletic directors or the league office.
The only member of the MAC right now that isn't considered a "doctoral extensive" or "doctoral intensive" institution by the Carnegie classification system -- or, in the language of the U.S. News annual rankings, a "national university" -- is Eastern Michigan.
Western Kentucky would make it two.
This stuff matters to the university presidents and it matters to me some. For instance, I suspect if most fans here were polled, they would dump Buffalo in exchange for Western Kentucky. But I would not. Buffalo is effecitvely the flagship of the SUNY system, and that's great company to keep, even if their football team loses to Patriot League opponents now and again.
All that said, I believe Western Kentucky could be a good addition to our league.
And yet...
What bothers me a little bit is that by adding two new members, the MAC ought to try to make it add up to more than two.
Western Kentucky and Temple add up to two -- and less than two, really, if you consider the fact that Temple is only in for football.
But look at it this way: Out east, we have Buffalo and Temple. Is there something else we could do out there -- in that sea of TV markets and desert of Division I-A football -- to solidify ourselves out there and make the MAC something more than it is now?
The example I keep coming back to is Albany. If the Great Danes ever wanted to go I-A, I think they'd be an awesome fit for us. Albany is a decent-sized TV market, the university is much stronger than WKU, the Great Danes would give Buffalo an instate rival, it would solidify the MAC in upstate New York and the move would send a message to Temple (or another potential future members out that way) that we might make a little more sense for their other sports.
Albany's I-AA football program is weak and they don't appear to have any intention at all of going I-A -- which is precisely why I'm using the example. My thinking on this is longer term, and more about markets and academics than the here and now of what's happened on the field or the court.
There are other more exciting examples out there. My dream add would be Massachusetts, which appears to toy with the idea of I-A football now and again.
Is this what the MAC is thinking? Maybe not.
But I kind of hope they are -- and I'd like to think they may know more than we do -- both about the sea change that may happen in the next few years when more conference shuffling happens, and about the intentions of schools out east to potentially consider going I-A.
Or, all this longwinded stuff put another way, I think Western Kentucky would make more sense if the MAC was also looking at Southern Illinois or Middle Tennessee to pair them up with.
Since Temple is already partially in, I think it makes more sense to keep looking east.

I seem to remember -- and I forget the source, it may be old timers on the Western Kentucky board -- that the annual Bowling Green-Western Kentucky basketball game was a real factor in persuading WKU that it was time to integrate the basketball team.orangeandbrown wrote:Actually, there was at one time (during the Harold Anderson days) a rivalry and annual game between WKU and BG....a kind of battle of the Bowling Greens.
I guess Bowling Green went into Western Kentucky with Nate Thurmond one year and just whipped the Hilltoppers.
One of their fans recalls that murmuring had already started before fans had left the building. It was time, some of their fans were saying as they walked out, to consider players they hadn't considered before.

Can't say for sure about the integration question, but I CAN tell you that WKU and its "legendary" coach, Ed Diddle, had some really good games with us....Ed was famous for carrying, waving and "slamming" a RED towel around.... Harold Anderson came out with a GREEN towel (no, not orange- wasn't the BIG color then) to counter old Ed's piece of cloth, and the place went nuts!

If I get naked and streak around the field like a rabbit during all home games, would that ease everyone's problems with the schedule? Since no one is satisfied with the opponents, I thought this might give everyone something to look forward to and encourage them to still come on out and support the Falcons. I won't wear in support while streaking. It all will be hanging out.

I think our reputation for drawing "small" crowds doesn't need to be reinforced like that.BGorDeath wrote:If I get naked and streak around the field like a rabbit during all home games, would that ease everyone's problems with the schedule?
