Shocking story re Leach...
Hands down the most interesting and entertaining coach in college football. He'll be missed.
And innovative.
Dude changed football for the better in MASSIVE ways on every level from HS->College->NFL.
We use Genius and coaches way too frequently. I don't think even he would think he was a genius. But he understood kids, he understood football, and he understood what it takes to optimize the game. And he did it at a time (and at places) where everybody told him you flat out couldn't make it work...and he just always did. He laid the philosophical groundwork for the most successful (and entertaining) BGSU teams of our lifetime, and you could realistically say he laid the philosophical groundwork for nearly every successful offense out there in modern football.
Even if you go beyond Xs & Os. The way he taught and practiced offensive football? The things he was doing 25 years ago are now basic requirements given health/practice limitations at most levels.
Which brings up an interesting point to debate. Saban and Meyer are the most successful college coaches of this era...but are/were they influential? Leach was very influential...so who has the more impactful legacy.
On a side note...love to see Harbaugh win it all this year because it will kinda stick it to both Saban and Meyer. Neither of them were good in the NFL. Harbaugh was and continues to be brought up in discussions for NFL gigs
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Urban's offense, if you want to say he owned it, borrowed heavily from what Leach was already succeeding with at Kentucky/Oklahoma. Urban & Brandon borrowed heavily on the notion of using all of your skill players equally for true balance, spreading the field and passing, simplifying plays to the easiest levels, etc...Urban actually took that one step further by making the QB a key rushing threat to make defenses defend all 6 skill players on every play.
I do think Urban was influential in that regard with the read option stuff that is still in use a lot today. More influential than Leach? Nah, but still pretty influential. Back then the spread was still pretty damned new, and it was almost unheard of to run from it, especially with the QBs. I don't think Urban's influence passes the test of time as much as Leach's will prove to, but still, he was influential.
I don't think Saban is influential at all. Hell he was behind the times for awhile until realized he could marry his hard-ass execute no matter what mindset to more modern offenses. He just recruits better and teaches better and demands more than anybody else.
Saban more of a copycat. Bitched about hurry up offenses and 5 minutes later he had one. Obviously he’s good a bunch of other things though along with being a good copycat.

Sad to hear about Mike Leach. Life is fleeting. He was one of a kind, and revolutionized modern college football. Probably will be some time before another mind like his comes around as there is only so much you can do within the construct of the rules of the game. He found a winning formula though and other coaches were able to put their flavor into it and achieve various levels of success. Plus, he brought some much needed personality, humor, and candidness to a profession that likes to hide behind cliches.

Kent State is hiring Kenni Burns as their new HC.
He comes over after serving as the Minnesota RBs coach.
Played at Indiana from 2003-2006.
Coaching career:
-Millersville (PA) RBs 2007
-Southern Illinois TEs 2008-2009
-North Dakota State WRs 2010-2013
-Wyoming WRs 2014
-Western Michigan RBs 2016
-Minnesota RBs 2017-present
Never an OC or DC has to be concerning to Kent fans. This feels like a Mike Jinks hire...
Is it a Jinks hire or is it reality for hiring a HC in most of the MAC moving forward? I don’t feel like Loeffler’s eventual replacement is even going to have a Wikipedia page, at the rate the rest of college football is moving…

Fair question, but I still think this feels like a speed hire. Granted, he's got a hell of a track record as a positions coach. Much better than Jinks had. I hope the next BG head coach has HC experience at some level. FCS, D-II, D-III, NAIA, anything. I've had my eye on Matt Mitchell at GVSU for a couple of years now. Division II is a hard level to win at and he's done it consistently for over a decade while recruiting some studs.
