Essentially he had a 7-3 season with 2 exhibition games. That seems ok to me. If his offense was better.

I don’t think you can count the money games as exhibitions without counting our own FCS game. In that case we were 6-3 with a roster talented enough to be 9-0.

I’d rather be mad than hopeless, which is what Loeffler has brought back from the Jinks days. He has recruited well, brought in seemingly good kids, is a great supporter of all BG athletics. I’m grateful he brought us back from a full-on dumpster fire. That said, he underachieved greatly, and I hope they don’t extend him or that someone else picks him up. This needed to be a MACC game year and it wasn’t.

Clawson’s seat is getting warm in W-S from what I’ve heard. He has one more year to get it going in the right direction again. He’s been a bit slow to adjust to the NIL world.

Back out the money games...back out the gimmes...Fordham, Kent , Ball State...etc.. What our season boiled down to was four games against teams we should beat if we're actually a good football team. UT, NIU, Miami and ODU. Win those games and the gimmes and you have a really nice season regardless of the outcome of the money games. DO poorly and you'll have just another season....

We went 1-3 in those games..all of the losses being at home.

That's why I think a change is needed

At what point does it get beyond simply the wins/losses? I mean, they're not good enough. His overall record is pathetic. The past 2 seasons have been somewhat competitive, but still not actually good. No berths in the championship game, and continue to choke in the big games needed to get us there. Still, even if you wanted to argue the records were acceptable, does entertainment value not matter?

I personally find Loeffler's teams awful to watch. I basically wrote off caring about spending my time watching BG football until this year. Fannin & Stewart made the games watchable again, but I still don't see anything truly entertaining in the style with which we're attempting to win. It's even more maddening that it seems to work when we out-talent teams, but falls apart when we don't. I guess props that we finally had a couple years near the top of the conference in scoring (although I think last year was largely defensive turnover generated, still, points). We're still mired middle of the MAC in offensive yards the past 2 seasons, which is Loeffler's high water mark since the bulk of his tenure we've been at the very bottom.

Color me deeply concerned if we finished 5th & 6th in MAC offense with a 4th/5th yr QB that had a Big10 pedigree what's going to happen in the coming season(s).

I know...I'm in the minority. As I've aged, I've found that I'd gladly bring back a Brandon type coach (minus the whole academic/off field crap). We're not likely to ever compete on any stage beyond the MAC. History shows we can win a couple titles here & there in the MAC, make some mediocre bowl games and move on. But dammit, can't we at least try to be fun and entertaining while we slam our heads against that glass ceiling? I dunno, maybe it's wishful thinking with NIL/Portal that it's impossible to build an entertaining offense in the MAC these days (the whole conference has really not done well the past couple years), but man, I'd like to try.

Gimme a Babers or Brandon type coach over Loeffler any day. Hell, I was pretty well done with watching Clawson's teams until he found the Matt Johnson gem.

Loeffler's inability to recruit a decent OL here has been his undoing. He's done a good job bringing in talented players and deserves some credit for that, but on the whole it's been underwhelming.

The days of Babers like hires are gone. P4 coordinator jobs are more lucrative and attractive than toiling away at a mediocre mid-major. BG will need to offer seven figures to bring in anyone worth a damn.

With the state of higher education in Ohio, that’s not happening here either. Toledo is bleeding money thanks to that contract they gave Candle. BGSU is one of the only schools in Ohio with positive enrollment trends and a positive financial outlook. I would rather keep Loeffler and keep the University running than offer 2-3x his salary to somebody and then lay off a bunch of staff.

Yeah, I'm no fan of Loeffler ball, but I'd prefer him to the BS that Toledo has done by giving a ton of money. No MAC coach is worth that much money... the revenue of the sport simply doesn't justify it.

I'm still not convinced that the Babers like hires are completely out of the realm of possibility. I think BG still pays better than the top tier FCS jobs. Sure, it's not the best path to the tippy top, and for sure HC in the MAC is a step below the pecking order behind P5 coordinators (and probably position coaches in some cases). But I would think BG could pay enough to make a run at most successful D2 or FCS coaches and it'd be a solid career move for most of them. We're not likely to nab the top guys at the best FCS programs, simply because there will be better G5 jobs for them than BG. BG has shown that you can win here though, even though you won't get compensated where you may want to.

Now I don't know if those guys exist, but I'd pretty much always put 90% of my focus on young HCs from lower divisions. I think you can find better coaches there at a budget number we can justify.

It would be stupid to throw a Candle like offer out there...agree with hammb in that we're probably better served hiring a lower division HC who views the job as a stepping stone, or to a coordinator or position coach willing to sacrifice a couple of years of higher earnings to build a rep as a HC.

Maybe I'm wrong...but I recall the last time SL was facing a contract year there was a lot of chatter about giving him an extension. Not hering any of that talk now. Could be telling...or not...I honestly do not know

For sure, good stuff. I guess what I meant was that it's harder to find the salaries of these guys since many are private institutions.

I don't think FCS coaches would be inclined to leave a successful top tier FCS school (one competing for titles) if they're making $350-450k a year. We simply aren't capable of paying that much more than that and it's definitely tougher here to sustain real success here. However, I also suspect a lot of the FCS coaches (and probably some on your list) are making closer to $250k and would probably jump at a chance to double their salary and put out an FBS HC resume.

I think we pay about $650K which would be a decent boost, I do agree that it would be harder to pull guys like Brent Vigen, Jimmy Rogers and Jason Eck because there are so many California/West coast schools and they don't have ties to the midwest as much. Someone like Brian Wright at N Arizona has midsest ties and would get the boost.

My guess is he gets an extension. Whether it's one year or two is the question. Odds are 2025 is a down year, so then what do you do?
