RS JR DB Cedric Mitchell to portal

Just saw that he has been here for 4.5 years, and already has a D-2 offer from GVSU. I'd guess he found out he wasn't going to be at the top of the depth chart and decided to pursue the grad degree elsewhere. No complaints when someone has put in some serious time and work here. Not sure if it's been mentioned but Rico Frye is transferring. Played sparingly in 2018 and missed 2019 due to injury.

I would imagine it has if he's entering the portal. Given he hasn't played in two years, probably going to be tough sledding finding a suitor. Hope the best for the young man though.

That's a tough one, but I think he was brought in as a tight end and that's one of our deepest positions, so he was switched to offensive tackle. Maybe he didn't want to be an offensive lineman? Best of luck to the kid.

Two years ago Loeffler raved…I mean RAVED…about Joey Carroll when he signed with BG. Loeffler said - and I quote - that Carroll was a future NFL player. He honestly couldn’t stop talking about how good he was and the potential he had. Since then, he was moved to another position all together, and now he’s become yet another departure on a busting at the seams list of BG defections.

He still could be a potential NFL player. We don't know the situation as to why he's transferring so baselessly ripping the coaching staff for his decision is rather silly.

He raved about him because he flipped him from Toledo with a phone call. Just like ALL coaches gloss every recruit they get. What happens after they get here is what matters, that no one can really project. A few of the “rock stars” we got recently will be playing for a cover band at a HS prom. There are not very many 5 star HS recruits in the NFL…..proof it is a dart board.

Edit: not piling on Joey at all. Just the coaches glossing is not Indicative of anything. He’s a good kid, got moved, got injured. Hope the best for him.

Another OL is entering the transfer portal - John O'Brian. He was an all-state kid out of Michigan and played in each of the past two seasons (6 games).

O'Brian is one of the last remaining Jinks recruits. Class of 2018. 2 years remaining. Hope he does well somewhere. Given the timing, my guess is someone younger is doing better in camp and he's worried about playing time.

BG apparently got a new CB from Virginia Tech a few days ago, in Devin Taylor. He originally was at Illinois State and was a third-team FCS All-American in 2019, then transferred to VT. He started 8 games there last season and was 4th on the team in tackles, also picked up 2 picks and had 4 PBUs last year. Seems like a pretty great get, to me.

If true, don’t think he can play this season if transfer after July 1. That date may also be if entered the Portal AFTER July 1….. not sure rules…..??
