Same here J4H... I still pull for UM, but I don't get NEARLY the same feeling I get when they pull out a big win as when BG does.

In defense of Jay Crawford - He did work for WBNS in Columbus for a number of years.
I root for Cleveland State basketball because I am in their band. WHen BG comes to town, you KNOW I will root for BGSU, but I like CSU. I think that it's OK to root for Ohio State and BGSU.
I don't think it is OK to root for Ohio State because there is more on the line for Ohio State. (Just make it close, BGSU
)
Imagine if BGSU beats OSU - to whom is it a bigger deal?

haha, this thread could go around in circles for years!! The bottomline is we see different things and have different opinions on what is "right". That's OK, but to respond to one persons comment, which has ALREADY been answered, why do OSU fans come to BG or other mid major schools? Education...I didnt come to BG for the football team, I thought it was a cool benefit I would be attending a school with division 1 athletics, but that isnt what drove my decision.
Ill be back when this thread comes up around the OSU game..haha

Well '87 I grew up a huge fan of OSU. I did want to go there. I had the HS credentials & test scores to attend any school in the country that I wanted. I applied at OSU and was accepted & offered a pretty good scholarship package. BG, however, offered me about a thousand or more dollars a year than OSU, and that was enough to cover all tuition (at the time, not by the time I graduated).1987alum wrote:jp:jpfalcon09 wrote:I pushed myself in high school to get a good GPA so I could attend BG...I just wonder why all the kids who grew up OSU fans didn't push themselves to go to OSU but ended up going to mid-major schools.
Great point. I have to tell you, if I was a huge fan of a school before I went to college, that's where I would've set my target. Around here, there are tons of kids who are all about Penn State, then end up at smaller schools, but never kick the Blue & White habit. Good grief, if you love the school that much - wouldn't you want to go there? I just don't get it.
My parents were not going to give me a penny for school, but they would let me live at home for free. So BG just got about a couple more grand cheaper a year. I wanted to go into CS, and BG had a pretty good CS program. OSU didn't even have a true CS program, it was something slightly different, but I don't remember what. In the end I didn't want to be saddled with a ton of loans needlessly, and I knew I'd be getting a good education at BG, so I chose that rather than OSU. Not real fond of OSU's campus either, but that wasn't real high on my list of reasons for not going there.
I grew up attending BG Hoops & Hockey games with my grandparents, but we never really got into BG football that much when I was young. I'd go to one or two games a year, but not enought to overcome growing up an OSU fan. So I was a fan of both schools growing up, but a bigger OSU football fan than BG fan. Once I got on campus however, we sang Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba at my orientation, and I became a BG fan first & foremost. Once I discovered the joy of tailgating my BG fandom was set in stone. Then I discovered this site and realized I was not alone.
Still, I've always rooted for OSU, and always will. I cannot stand to discuss OSU sports with most of their fans, even most of my good friends. Still, I root for OSU when they're not playing BG. I could've went there, but BG was the right school for me.

Im with you on this one 87. I grew up the biggest florida state fan, but if bg and fsu were ever to play i would want bg to win. Im still a huge fsu fan and always will be. I'll admit it, I knew nothing of bg sports except that brian holzinger and rob blake went to bg for hockey becuase everyone knows im a hockey guy. At the time I got accepted in high school I think the only mac football players I could name were Leftwich and Darrius Watts.
SOME PEOPLE DO NOT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT SPORTS. SOME PEOPLE GO TO SCHOOL FOR EDUCATION, NOT GIVING A DAMN ABOUT THAT SCHOOLS TEAMS AND ONLY PAYING ATTENTION TO THE ONES THEY GREW UP WITH.hammb wrote:I am still loyal to OSU as well, I grew up rooting for them all my life.bgbrandon wrote:jacobs, yes i will be rooting for OSU, they have a lot more on the line than bg does, and it is basically a big payday for BG. I want BG to compete and not get embarrassed but really, is BG going to compete for a NC?
TG..Thats why I say I hate to admit it.. I love college football so I dont care if BG is playing st. marys school for the blind, I will go watch them play if OSU doesnt have a game. I would rather go watch OSU on tv where it is more exciting with them playing a better team, than to watch BG play Kent St. with 1500 quiet fans.. Just my opinion..and I know its bad because I could be trying to make a difference, but like i said in my earlier post..I was born (literally at OSU medical center) and raised with Ohio State and I will always be loyal to them.
Still, I cannot fathom rooting against my alma mater for any reason. It's your choice, and all, but I think you're looking at it wrong. You say OSU has more to lose in that game, and to be sure you're right, but who has more to gain? Without a doubt BG beating OSU would be HUGE news in the college football world.
I talk to people all the time that were OSU people before going to MAC schools and they still root for OSU over their alma mater. I still don't understand how you can put 4+ years of your life into an institution and not feel a connection to their sports teams over some childhood team, but that's just my opinion. I don't get where the no excitement with going to the games comes from either. My senior year was Urban's first year here, and we had a ton of students at all those games, and we had a blast.
its not hard to understand
I dont ignore it, i just dont root for the sports teams as much as I do as my child hood favorite team. I have BG stuff on my walls in my basement along with my OSU stuff, I have a diploma hanging in my office. I acknowledge attending BGSU. But I attneded it for reasons other than football. hell the football team was 2-9 my freshman year.1987alum wrote:But hammb, you've struck the happy medium.
I can understand not attending the school you loved growing up as a kid. But I don't understand ignoring the school you actually attended.
it doesnt mean that I ignore BG, its just not where my heart is.

If BG wins people will talk about it for a year and then everyone from outside of BG will forget about it

No - I don't think people outside bg will forget it. The first Ohio team to beat Ohio State in forever will be a "big deal." The game will be mentioned every single time an Ohio team plays Ohio State.tekekini wrote:OSU because it is one more game closer to the BCS championshipFalcon30 wrote:In defense of Jay Crawford - He did work for WBNS in Columbus for a number of years.

And if by some miracle, BGSU goes undefeated with wins over Wisconsin and #1 Ohio State, we will be in a BCS bowl. It would be the biggest season in the history of BG football, including the nat. champ year.
You are waaaay off-base here.
Also - if sports isn't a big deal, then why do you get so prissy when Ohio State gets tweaked here? "SOME PEOPLE DO NOT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT SPORTS"??????????????????? Then why do you care when the school you ONLY root for because it was your childhood team you 'grew up with.' gets busted once in a while by people who don't see it like you. You are shouting it to the wind, but it is the ONLY reason you care about Ohio State.
