Some points

Post by gentlesatirist »

1 - Announced crowd of 30,300 actually was a little more than it seemed.

2 - At a number of bars before the game and at the game as well, crowd seemed to be split about 60-40 in favor of BG. I actually thought there were a lot of Wisconsin fans there. A # of them that I talked to said they drove 8-10 hours to get there.

3 - I'd like to see some info on how many BG grads live in the multicounty area around Cleveland and Akron. The alumni office probably figures this out just by running a spreadsheet based on zip codes.

4 - How in the world does Anthony Turner get busted for dope the week before making his official debut as BG's starting QB? Doesn't that say a lot about the guy's leadership abilities?

5 - Why was Corey Partridge out?

6 - If I'm a Wisconsin fan, I can't feel good about this game. The much-larger Badger team had all of 2 sustained drived in the first 50 minutes of a game vs. a MAC team that's expected to be .500 this year. That doesn't bode well for Wisconsin's Big 10 schedule.

7 - And how Wisconsin didn't just send a guy flying at BG's QB every play is beyond me. After the first 10 or so runs, you'd think they would have caught on.

All in all, a good experience. made me proud to be a BG alum.

Welcome to the board!

As for some of your observations (mostly about the Cleveland experience), I too thought that 30,000 seemed a little high, but think it just looked small because of the stadium.

There is a list of alumni-by-area, most likely at www.bgsualumni.com, but I know it's been posted as a link here before.

I thought downtown before the game made it feel like there were going to be alot more UW fans than there were. Of course, when I hit the tailgate, it felt like a BG home game.

Turner didn't get busted "a week before", he got busted in the spring. I forget the timetable of when exactly (in relation to the spring game, practice, etc.), but it's been known for awhile that he was busted and not playing vs. Wisky.

Partridge tweaked his knee a few weeks ago, but coaches and parents seem to think that if he's not back for Buffalo, he'll likely be back next week. (Unless something's changed there. There are better people on this board to ask this question of. )

The incident occurred before Spring practice started, IIRC. Turner's buddy and high school teammate (cant remember his name) was listed on the Spring roster, but was dismissed from the team after the incident came to light. I believe he may have been involved in the first week of practice. But it seems to me that the actual incident ocurred several weeks before Spring practice started.

Thanks for the info...

...must have missed that one. Did it get out in the media?

Cleveland PD had a nice feature on BG's Dan Macon in the week before the game, but I wasn't very impressed with his performance.

Thought the Falcon d-line did a good job of holding its ground. Wisconsin didn't roll up the big rushing yardage like last year.

Take a look at the BGSU Fact Book

Welcome to the board gentle :)

Most of your questions were pretty well answered by the other guys. I do agree that Macon was disappointing. He's looked very good in the practices/spring game, so I think it might've just been nerves or UW's defense. He'll be fine.

The BG D-line did a much better job Saturday than they did in many games last year. They are definitely an improved unit. If only our LBs could actually tackle they could've taken better advantage of that improved play up front.

Finally, I agree with you on Wisconsin. I was not at all impressed with the team they fielded Saturday. Their best offensive player, Thomas, is coming off surgery & struggled with Parks' quickness at times; I imagine that he'll face some even better DEs than Parks this year, that could be scary. Stocco is still dull, but serviceable. We made their RB look better than he really is, IMO, by not even attempting proper tackle technique. If that was Calhoun he goes for another 250, those guys are no Calhoun. Their defense did not impress at all either. I'd like to think it was all about our prowess on offense, but the fact is that we basically wrote them a memo saying how we wouldn't pass and they still couldn't stop our running game. I'm not sure this UW team wins more than 5 games in the Big10 this year.

I'm hoping that my impressions of UW's play are way off base, they are a surprisingly good team this year, and BG was just that good to run on them. BG then goes on to a 12-2 season and MAC championship :)

Having the two bands in opposite corners battling it out added to the atmosphere. I was on the club level and going in to get a beer or food there were BG people everywhere.

To call this a disappointment baffles me, frankly.
Me too. More would have been better, but I thought that was about all you could have expected, crowd wise. We had a great time.

My only hope is that we don't over do it. Novelty matters in something like this. If we try to do it more often, I worry it would wear out the welcome. Let it go five years, let demand become pent up, and then let it go.
I agree, O & B. We had a blast (losing the game sucked but everything else was great). I thought it was a success for a first run.
