FWIW, we had our second highest yards per carry and third most yards in a game against NIU. 29 attempts, 142 yards, 4.9 per carry. I understand the point you are trying to make, but given the growth of our passing game, maybe we should have passed more against NIU and run less!
You can attribute most of the yards on the ground from that game to the first two possesions. After that there were no signs of life in the running game.
I love stats, because if you know what you're doing you can use them to support any point either way
I didn't even bother to look at the stats of the NIU game when I wrote what I wrote. What I do know is that our running game was nonexistant throughout most of that game, and the passing game struggled more than in any of our other games.
Now that I look back at the stats I'm going to have to believe that most of those yards were on the first couple drives, because it sure seemed like we couldn't move the ball on the ground worth a darn for the better part of that game.
I say the first two drives because I can remember Pope running for 15+ yards a few times in those opening series. I remember thinking man we are going run all over them; we are going kick their butt again. They quickly sealed up the holes in the 2rd quarter.

I agree with ya there, because I missed the first couple drives of that game, and I didn't think we ran the ball well AT ALL.
HEre are my thoughts from the NIU game and our rushing attack. It seemed to me that if we rushed the ball 3 times 1 time would be stopped for a loss or no gain, 1 time would be for a short gain <4 yrds and 1 time we would break out a nice 6 - 15 yrd run. I was actually wishing we would run the damn ball more since we had success with that at least 2/3 of the time. I wish Omar ran more that game since the one big play that I remember of him running worked really really well. But I wish most of all that we would stop worrying about the NIU game that was a month ago and focus on this weeks opponent.
Charlotte I think the reason why I am so hung up on the NIU game is that it was the last quality opponent that we have faced. It is pointless to say we're so good because we're beating up on these other teams...fact is so would 50% of Division1A.
My problem is I see things that kept us from winning against a quality opponent in NIU that have still not been fixed against the lesser opponent's were playing now. These teams can easily be beaten with a flawed team, but against UT & Marshall we may not be so lucky.
My biggest problem is that I want the world. I want BG to be in the position Utah is with a quality win over a good team and looking an undefeated season square in the eye. Is that to much to ask?

So do I...but with Oklahoma on the 2004 sked and BG breaking in a new QB in Omar?

I didn't say it had to be this year. We performed admirably against OU, and that was all that we could ask for. We had little shot opening at OU with a new QB.
However, if you're going to go through a season undefeated you have to make adjustments even though you're winning, because you know that your opponents are dissecting everything you do! It wouldn't hurt to try and fix some of our weaknesses during a 5-2 season either
I don't have the stats on all the MAC teams, but I do know that Central Michigan, and certainly NI have no trouble whatever running the ball at all I wonder why. Maybe their superb running backs have something to do with it.
