That picture is actually from the '98 season after #1 Ohio State lost at home to Michigan St., ruining their dreams of a national championship. I remember it well because I cut it out of the paper and hung it on the bulletin board at work the next day.

I must have had it confused it with this one:

OSU was the preseason #1 that year. They were by FAR the best team in college football that year. FSU/UT weren't even close to the same level as that OSU squad. That was by a long stretch the greatest OSU team I've ever watched in my lifetime.moneymaker02 wrote:ohio state was number 1 in 98???? Isn't that the year that Tennessee beat florida state in the national championship?? i remember being really mad about that because we had to start a true freshmen at quarterback and burn his redshirt because wienke broke his neck.
However, they still had John Cooper as their coach, and they overlooked a very mediocre MSU team. They had a 4th down play at the end that would've given them the game, but Germain inexplicably threw to Dee Miller instead of David Boston with the game on the line...baffling.
Only a coach of John Cooper's ability could manage to lose a game with that squad that season.

here we go, hammb is back on osu's nuts. if wienke hadn't broken his neck fsu woulda cruised all season just like they did in 99 when they blew out Va Tech. FSU had a hiesman winner, 3 nfl recievers, and an nfl running back on that team. The 99 team, which was virtually the same as 98, is widely brought up in discussions as one of the best teams of all time. Wienke, Warrick, E.G. Green, Ron Dugans, snoop mennis, travis minor, samari rolle, peter boulware, sam cowart, tommy polley, come on man, you just cant compete with that.
The OSU team was just as talented with Katzenmoyer, Diggs, Pickett, Winfield, Plummer, Damon Moore, Gary Berry, Boston, Wiley. Those guys didn't go on to have the same NFL careers as those FSU guys did, but they were just as dominant in college.moneymaker02 wrote:here we go, hammb is back on osu's nuts. if wienke hadn't broken his neck fsu woulda cruised all season just like they did in 99 when they blew out Va Tech. Both teams lost games that they shouldn't have lost, but were loaded with talent. I think that OSU was a better team that year than FSU because they were the more experienced group, FSU was younger; hence the 1999 team is the one that is considered their best. You may want to go back and check your record books, because FSU did not "cruise all season", even if Wienke stayed healthy. They were not undefeated in the regular season; much like OSU they lost a game they shouldn't have (to a 7-5 NC State team). FSU got the invite to the NC game basically because they lost early in the year and OSU lost later in the year. That's the way the polls work...
Sadly, Tennessee had the best year, and I don't think they were as talented as either of those two teams.

Exactly, Weinke wasn't hurt during that NC State game and they got killed. FSU scored on it's first play of the game and that was it. They lost 24-7 and the great Weinke threw SIX interceptions.hammb wrote:You may want to go back and check your record books, because FSU did not "cruise all season", even if Wienke stayed healthy.
