Personally - you can say what you want about Ben - but the word is he has given back to Miami more than we ever gave him. (I was told by reliable sources Ben donated part of his signing bonus to Miami..... it may have been 7 figures) I wish we could get our alumni (BG) athletes to step up like Ben has...... and he regularly comes back to Oxford during his bye week (if Miami is playing) and any kid approaching him will be cordially treated. That has been our PERSONAL experience.
If true , then thats a whale lot more than AD has ever done for BG since he's gotten the NBA. Maybe that'll soon change now with Coach Orr at the helm.
And YOU KNOW what AD has or hasn't done for BG, correct?
I believe it is pretty common knowledge that AD has been pretty disconnected from the basketball program, and the university in general, since his graduation.

I also think it's pretty common knowledge why that's the case.

And the thing is Hammb - this is why we have to strike while the iron is hot on a lot of our alumni. You have to roll out the red carpet to show your appreciation for these people while they are in the limelight. ALL ALUMNi should be treated this way. Its how you suddenly get $5 million from some widow's estate because she felt connected to the U all her life and we were such a big part of it.......

That's why so many people - Findlay included - want to show their appreciate for Ben's success. The fact that he is actually a good person and gives back to his "communities" shows his real character.

We need the U to approach the AD's of our school and talk to them, ask them to come back to be honored, ask them to participate in some aspect of the program - whatever - It's not @$$kissing - its marketing. I talked to some of the 1984 hockey team during their 20th anniversary weekend. They all commented on how well they were being treated and that they were honestly touched by the experience. I would be shocked if we haven't seen an increase in their giving to the U. Hell - I would be happy to see them help recruit students in their area (not athletes necessarily).

I think I am preaching to the Choir - right?

No, most people in Findlay are Ben Friend wannabes or name droppers. They just want to say they know him. Nothing more, nothing less. It's amazing how many people in this town have a "true" connection to the big oaf.

Yes - I am sure there is lots of that. It's a fact of life. You need to get beyond that.

Findlay is a small town - like Troy. If the fact that I knew Randy Walker (who was about 7 yrs older than me) growing up and played some sandlot football with him and his high school buddies (including my brother) as a kid makes me a namedropper - fine. And let me tell you - if Randy and I had met after all those years away from Troy - he wouldn't know me from Adam. I have housed the poor and provided new urban spaces for entire communites to enjoy. I personally have changed how cities look. Randy Walker taught some kids how to block out of the backfield. Whose had a bigger impact on the world - who is better known?

Big Ben (easy then typing his last name - not that I personally know him - just to make you happy) is at least using his position to change things where he can help. Donating the police dogs seems to be pretty noble.

As far as your Big Oaf comment..... he's a football player. What do you want from him - should he solve conflict in the Mid East? I appreciate what he has done for Miami football and athletics in general. That's about it. He isn't a Rhoades scholar - which Miami has had in their past.

There are buildings on Miami's Campus named after people that made a real difference in the world. Ben's not going to have his name on any classroom buildings. Quite frankly, I would rather see Mr. Sebo's name on a new College of Business than on a building limited to athletes. But it's his money.

Relax - Ignore it if it bothers you.... you're better than this.

I guess if you lived in Findlay you would have a better understanding of my feelings toward Mr. Roethlisberger. You get sick of hearing about him when there are other people in this community who are just as newsworthy for their accomplishments and contributions, but get overlooked because they never won a Super Bowl.

I'm from Oregon and it's really no different with Kate Achter. She's Ms. Everything back home, and rightfully so. Some people loathe her for it, some embrace it. I guess every city is going to have it's favorite son per say, and it's not hard to see why Findlay embraces Ben the way they do. I guess the heart of the discussion is about how he could be a bit more humble, success came to him very fast. I met him at the Jamie Farr Celeb Pro/Am and I wasn't too impressed, but that's his right. No doubt though, he has given back in many ways and for that I am happy to say he's from Ohio.
