Ryan...if you do happen to get the ziggy...hang in there. You're talented and passionate about your work...those are qualities that are always in demand somewhere.

Exactly 83...in a normal corporate enviroment younger and cheaper kids like RYan would be retained while the older, more expensive people would be gone...it's the best thing for the company as it can retain a larger workforce. In terms cost how many Ryan's does it take to equal a Hackenburg? It's probably more than one....even though the talent rato is considerably less than one.

Yeah... Ryan didn't make the cut.
I understand unions had a place and a reason... but when someone very talented loses their job because someone else, with less talent... or not even in a comparable job, has more seniority based upon the union contract... it pisses me off.

Ditto. Good luck, Ryan!ZiggyZoomba wrote:I understand unions had a place and a reason... but when someone very talented loses their job because someone else, with less talent... or not even in a comparable job, has more seniority based upon the union contract... it pisses me off.
I can't wait for Saturdays in the fall when the three-paragraph AP story about the BG game graces the Blade's web site.

I knew they were just setting us up. First, Maureen who did a fine job, then Ryan who did a great job. Whammo! Now we'll probably get Hack back. There's a shining beacon of hope
Or maybe they will send the food editor and we'll have page 1 coverage of our tailgate-ing. Where we also excel over the Rockettes!

This stinks, I had a reason to go to the Blade Web site because there was a writer that took pride in his job/beat. I really enjoyed going to Ryan's blog and reading his updates. Rarely do you see his passion and it's a shame. If he decides to stay in the bussines, I'm certain he won't be looking for a job for long.
Any of you in the journalism field looking for a bright young writer?
My reason for reading the Blade just went to 0.

He covered us in the rotation of writers they used to do. Let's just say he isn't any Ryan as far as straight coverage. Opinions and columns-yeah he's got them!NY-BG-FAN wrote:That's unfortunate news about Ryan Autullo. I especially enjoyed reading the blog online. However, the attacks on Hackenberg seem completely unprovoked. I always thought he wrote pretty good stuff. I've liked his work at least.

Ryan is as talented as they come, which is why this whole thing just blows me away. He's been a role model for me since I got to BG and he will continue to be. Unfortunately Ryan and I have two things in common (per his earlier post), which is we're both sports writers. I'm leaving for my job in 10 days, and after finding out he was on the block, contacted my future boss to say thanks. The day I get down there I'm looking up classes in online journalism and Web design.
As for what's killed newspapers, it's a lot of things. Everything you guys have brought up is dead on, especially the point someone made about newspapers not willing to acknowledge the internet until a few years ago. As far as that goes, Craig Newmark didn't help much either.
Ryan you're a very talented writer and this is a major loss for every Falcon fan, inside the Blade's reach or not. If you want to drink in the next week you know where to find me.

Ryan - sorry about the news. As you know.... its not personal.... but its hard not to think it isn't personal.
On the bright side..... maybe its time to get that Masters in Mass Communication or the MBA.... whichever program will give you a full assistantship.
The only advice I truly can give it this........ Many times when someone of talent is severed or released from their current position, they are feel downtrodden. But what I have told my friends is that you don't realize it yet, but your future just got really bright. The Blade is in a down spiral like many other print media, instead of being sucked into the vortex created by the sinking ship, you have been released so that you can be engaged in better things. Look on this as a positive thing and make positive things happen.
Stay busy doing what writers do...... continue to practice your craft..... start your own blog.... don't be afraid to ask the Blade if they will buy free lance work in the interim.
