Re: Coaching Carousel
Comparing U of Miami to Penn State is basically an apples/oranges comparison. Penn State is one of the programs that if one gets the job, he doesn't leave voluntarily to go "somewhere else" in college football. Miami maybe used to be one of those programs, but it isn't anymore.
I'm talking about the schools with budget, commitment, support, facilities, etc. In no particular order:
Texas
Alabama
Florida
Oklahoma
Ohio State
Penn State
USC
Michigan
Notre Dame (maybe)
Miami doesn't sniff that group.

Re: Coaching Carousel
How does/did No IL and Florida hire people so quickly . . . and legally?
How long did it take BG to hire?
I thought there was a legal process (and 'honorable' review of internal applications) you had to follow - take applications, review all, interview, then make a decision that you could justify was equal for all applicants and 'why' you hired, who you did. And didn't.
I read the Florida AD said he 'knew exactly who he wanted' and went to TX and hired him . . indicating there was no application & review process.
Just curious how it seems those 2 hires almost seem to have someone 'waiting in the wings'.
Didn't BG take weeks (months?) - going with a 'national review process' with an outside firm doing all the leg work? Hum.

I "asked the AD" that exact same question yesterday! We'll see if he answers it and hopefully a truthful answer.

Re: Coaching Carousel
Pretty crazy that when this thread first started we were trying to come up with one or 2 names that could Potentially move on . I dont think anyone could have predicted that there would be 5 openings in the MAC before bowl season even started. Looks like Clawson will be one of seasoned Vets as we enter 2011.
And oh by the way, to say Miami (Fla) doesn't even sniff those top jobs is just an ignorant comment. Miami could win a national championship by just recruiting players within 45 minutes of campus. Dade and Broward county alone have enough talent to supply half of the Top 25 programs.

Re: Coaching Carousel
Pete lembo hired at Ball State as New Head Coach.. Interesting how many connections pete lembo has to the BG staff.. Clawson and Lembo have known eachother for a long time and have coached together on the same staffs. Both made a name for themselves in the Patriot League Clawson at Fordham and Lembo at Lehigh before moving on.
Also; warren ruggerio was pete lembo's OC at Elon when they were racking up yards. Will be interesting to see if Lembo tries to lure ruggerio to Ball state.(Some BG fans may want this to happen) either way lots of ties to clawsons staff

Way I figure it that's about 133 3, 4 and 5 star D1 recruits per year out of each county. Seems high.
(12.5 X 85 schollies /4 years).
Re: Coaching Carousel
On the news that Al Golden is out at Miami, I remembered this old string here about his hire from Temple. Some spirited debate. Funny to read the coaching carousel from five years ago. Some things never change..

So, in the MAC, who is in trouble?
Will Terry Bowden survive? What about Pete Lembo?

Lembo received a 5 year extension in 2014...he's not going anywhere.Schadenfreude wrote:So, in the MAC, who is in trouble?

Bowden is signed through 2017 or 2018. I doubt he's let go.
If a donor stepped up to pay for both, maybe. But neither university is swallowing those contracts, especially Akron.
The only guy I could see leaving is Solich and that would only be if he chose to retire.

Re: Coaching Carousel
I don't see anyone in the MAC getting canned this year, especially Bowden with the budget woes at Akron, it would be hard to justify firing a coach and buying out his contract with the crunch they're under.Schadenfreude wrote:So, in the MAC, who is in trouble?

Paul Haynes may get a look at Kent but I think even he'll survive the season just because they have won a couple conference games thus far.
At this point I do believe that Toledo and BG will be looking for a new head coach by the middle of December.

Going to be interesting to watch how this all plays out.

Brian Harsin, Justin Fuentes, Matt Rhule, Tom Herman, Matt Campbell, Babers, & PJ Fleck are probably the top candidates if people are looking for head coach experience. Kirby Smart, Brent Venables, DJ Durkin, Scott Frost, and Luke Fickell probably top the list as top assistants for a head coaching gig.
The jobs listed doesn't account for all the backfill that will take place if someone like Rich Rodriguez wants to get back to the east coach or Jim Mora wants back in the NFL. Going to be a lot of interim vs interim matchups in bowl games this year.
