The fact that Clawson inherited a team that had only 10 graduating seniors this year is a mark of a recruiting failure of the previous classes.

The third year of a coach is typically when the coaches own recruits start taking the field and playing, and I think those recruits have done a nice job so far.

You're looking at a team next year that has the majority of its "key" players coming back - with personnel that I believe will be able to fill the void at WR based on what I have heard from the practice film. (The position I believe was most impacted by graduation)

To win at any level of D1, you have to recruit - and I believe that Clawson has the personnel for this team to do very well next year.
+1

I liked Gregg Brandon as a coach and his offenses were often fun to watch, but you can't build a program when your competitors can bring in a couple of dozen more recruits. Do seniors make a difference? We can ask OU and NIU tonight, or see what it did for our program in 2009.

I'm most worried about the offensive line going into next year. This program seems to always replenish the wide receiver corps.

How many do you think we usually have? We normally recruit about 25 dudes and half head out in some way by the time they are done. I think 6 recruited players out of 1 class seems pretty low but I don't have any other number to compare it to.

look at the numbers...from 2009 forward we're doing a better job of keeping kids around. GB dod some really good things here, but in the end he was undone by an inability to recruit kids who would stick...

The next 2 years will tell us everything about Coach Clawson and the staff....and I think we're on the right track. The man was given a 5 year contract and has 2 years left on it. Let's see what happens in 2012-13 before wanting to run him outta town. I mean, the guy's won as a HC and was the 1-AA COTY TWICE....that means something to me. Look at his track record at Fordham and Richmond. It did not happen overnight...give the man a chance to fulfill his plans for the program. I also agree the BiG key for next year is the O line. Losing Ben B is huge and we need to keep improving on the line.

I always supported Coach Brandon but by the end of his tenure, it wasn't working anymore. He started cutting corners too much as the rest of the conference caught up to him, IMO.

That could also be because they have had less years to leave.

How many people graduated last year and the year before?

Look at the number of guys that blew out of Brandon's classes within a year or two...I know you love to dig into this kind of stuff...if you actuallyu look at the rosters you will see that in some years 40-50% of the class was gone within two years.

I will have to take a look because I think its fun. For what its worth I dont disagree with you, I think we lost a ton of guys then and was never a Brandon fan. I think we lost an abnormal #. But going from 25 to 10 over 5 years is not really all that surprising of a number for me. Guys who are upperclassmen tend to leave once they realize they are not starters, they might get coerced into leaving or flake out otherwise as well. I would do the same thing. My guess is that this type of thing happens a ton and it has less to do with Brandon and more to do with switching from one coach to another and a guy playing and bringing in his guys. I wonder how many OSU recruits from 2010 will be on the OSU roster in 2015.

OK...let's look at 2007 when GB signed 18 players. Half of them were gone within a year or two. A few of them never even made it to campus. Clawson comes in in 2009, signs 22 and by my count 20 are still here. THere is a marked difference.

FWIW I completely agree with you on this. I will try to take a look at this and see if I can tell when peeps jetted and what not over the long haul. My take on Clawson is not that he is awful by any means, but when you go 2-6 to close the season thats not good for anybody.

2-6 is disappointing...but only one of those losses came against a team with a sub .500 record...Kent State...and they finished .500 in the conference. We got beat by some good teams. This "win now or else" attitude so many on this board have is what leads coaches to cut corners and go for the boderline kids or just flat out cheat. I'm good with making progress from 2-10 to 5-7 if it looks like we're building towards soemthing. I am 100% behind what Clawson is doing...I think he's doing it the right way and I'm looking forward to 2012...
