I think that was one of the main things they focused on this year. The entire class is relatively big compared to some of the guys we've had the past couple of years. Can't say that's a bad thing.Falcon137 wrote:Did Campbell play any end last year?Flipper wrote:Charlie Walker has played DE for us as well. Somewhat suprised we didn't augment that group with a JUCO DE. Thomas is coming of a knee injury and I don't believe Hall and Baird played at all last year as true freshmen. Colvin is the only strongside DE of that group. Although, with the depth we have at DT, Ted Oulette or Jarius Campbell could slide outside like Kevin Moore did last year.
Mikhail Dubose had been a verbal at that spot, but he's apparently signed with WMU. WHich gives us all the more reason to hate them...
Short yardage and goalline you could see Colvin (275) and Campbell (295) on the ends, Maynard (317) Jones (300) up the middle with Croley (245) and Lynch (238) behind them. I can't remember a BG defense having that much size.

Re: Official Signing Day News
I really like this class because I think it focuses on areas of need. On offense, our skill positions are pretty much set for the next couple years. We have some major talent at QB, WR, and RB - just needed to beef up the line and I feel like we did that with this class. I think Chief will see some time this year in particular.
Defensively we just needed some size everywhere. We got a bunch of secondary help the past two classes - I'm especially excited for Johnny Joseph and Will Watson, two speed guys from Florida. We had a big need at linebacker and I think Croley will be the next great LB for us. Guy is huge and pretty fluid for his size. Hallmon could have a Boo Boo Gates type of impact.
On Special Teams we added the 17th best LS and a kicker who seems to have a huge leg (see the video). Great things to see.
We're going to have a ton of competition here the next few years and we should start seeing results this year. Everything is pretty much in place at this point. We have a ton of depth at every position.

Here's a link to what Wagner said about each of the new guys if anyone is interested in that.

And Clawson's comments:

A couple more random thoughts (sorry): I really wish we could have kept Tyler Goble. Props to him for serving in our armed forces, but he comes from a good family and is a pretty good athlete. Good luck to him though. Also, and this has already been mentioned but, if you look at this class with the inclusions of Pohlman, Schmiedebusch, Stokes, and Givens - this is the best class we've ever had on paper. Clawson is doing an excellent job of bringing talent in; that needs to translate onto the field.

One interesting tidbit from Clawson's presser...He said we have three QB's. Schilz, Johnson and now Knapke. It would have been nice to have one of the media types in attendance ask him about Malik Stokes since he's on the roster as a QB (the guys like Hurley how left aren't). Is he playing another position?

Re: Official Signing Day News
Pohlman was a preferred walk-on last year. He was on the two deep at FB but I have not heard if he was awarded a scholarship. I assume he meant Hosley.
Other than the QB Tanner Geary, has anyone heard of any walk-ons of note?

That Minns kid has no neck...but then he's DT and doesn't really need one.

Drago,Drago wrote:Im sure our recruiting class is fine, but I get really irritated with this coaching staff's infatuation with talking about team captains. Generally speaking high school football teams have 4-8 team captains and usually your best players are going to be captains. Every signing day that is all Clawson talks about is the signings being team captains. It should really be a given that your signings are team captains.....yet people get all excited about it.....dumb.
Oh yeah and fire GC.....just for you gmartin
You might have a "small" point re: that HS captains are usually the best players on their team... however, I've coached for many years, and had several years when a kid was basically a "backup", but just had a certain leadership quality to him that the other kids recognized.... I personally like that BG chooses to select players who've shown signs of LEADERSHIP while in school...it hopefully translates to their careers at the college level.

Had a great time at the Signing Day reception. I am pumped about this class...while on the small side, it is loaded. All the pieces are in place for a title run the next few years.

Freak, great seeing you and 61 on hand! Glad you guys made the trip.
Some good kids in there. Somebody asked who they were excited about- I really like Pettus and Chief. Chief flat out looks ready now- and should being a JC. But I mean he is STRONG- even pre Coach Hourigan. And Pettus? Pettus can tackle and do it in space. And also I like Will Watson- can run and swivel and is a much bigger corner than we normally get. And you heard coach say he played man up corner his whole career and against some good WR. Minns could be real good IMO. Might be a bit but this guy is thickly built w some feet too. Xenia safety Sanford is a playmaker and is potentially a good one who had a lot of offers. I also think Hallmon is for real and could play a lot of positions. Hit and run. OL Beggan out of Steel City- this guy is monstrous in person. Big big boy. Lastly, Given's tape? Frightening.

Givens...dude has some serious jets. And the OL we're bringing in are BiG and Strong. Croley at 6'3" 245, LB. I think Coach Clawson said he broke Dwayne Woods' tackle record at Cin Princeton. I think we have a heck of a group coming in....welcome to the nest, fellas!

FF1,
Good to see you too....and now you can admit that Given's tape was "sped up" right?
Interesting in that one of our coaches thought we'd be ranked around 4th or 5th as a class....the NINTH rank seems a bit low, but as I'd indicated before, linemen aren't the glamour boys....they just can make the difference between winners and losers. (Didn't NIU have FOUR sr. starting OL this year?).

Re: Official Signing Day News
"continues his commitment to recruit the 'state of Bowling Green' " What a joke that statement is. Clawson and his staff have been out recruited in this area since they got here.
We got NOBODY from NW Ohio. We can't touch the recruiting ground in Toledo. Toledo does well there, The Big Ten pulls kids from Toledo yearly; we don't.

I'll take the kids we got from Dayton, Cincy, and Detroit over the ones Toledo got from Toledo this year.
The top player Toledo got from Toledo was Storm Norton, BG has 4 OL rated higher than him.
