Oldballcoach...who should've been our QB during Schilz' run...Caleb Watkins?, Trent Hurley? Aaron Pankratz?

Re: BG should recruit a JUCO QB this year
FWIW ... the new young man who announced his transfer to BG, Gehrig Dieter, said his older brother Nolan will be on the team this next year. Nolan was a 4A All-Indiana QB, dual threat, and FWIW a leftie. He was a backup QB at Indiana, and being a backup to Tre Roberson is no insult to anyone. I have to wonder ... are the coaches eyeing Nolan as a potential competitor to Schilz? Healthy competition always helps all parties involved. Helps physical development, skills development, and brings out the best of attitudes and leadership. Matt had a huge jump in 2011 and I give a ton of credit for that jump to Trent Hurley. Matt became a better QB because Trent Hurley pushed him to succeed.

Flip.. If you look at Hurleys success this past year you can see the guy had /has the tools and definitely should have been given a fair shake at the QB slot while at BG. As for last year, Matty J never was given a real chance . That is, putting him in a meaningful situation with the 1's where in a game, and seeing what he really could achieve . I stand by my comments, #7 has shown no growth and doesn't show any promise for growth next year. JMO. As I said earlier, DC has a lot riding on next year for his future . Spring ball lip service won't cut it for next year.Flipper wrote:Oldballcoach...who should've been our QB during Schilz' run...Caleb Watkins?, Trent Hurley? Aaron Pankratz?

I really hope Schilz takes it to the next level in '13. He did pretty well in 2010 & 2011 but didn't have the breakout year in '12 like I thought he would.footballguy51 wrote: I think he may just shock everybody next year and be better than Sheehan was his senior year.

Re: BG should recruit a JUCO QB this year
Oldballcoach....I did not think Hurley showed the arm strength that our staff seems to like. Should that have precluded him from getting more of a shot when we were getting drilled in some of those 2011 games? I don't think so. I think Clawson was reluctant to pull Schilz in 2011 because he wanted him to get as many reps as possible coming off that horrible 2010 injury plauged season. I do think it's possible that he hasn't given the back ups more reps because he doesn't want to create a "QB controversy"....or maybe he just feels you put your best 11 out there as much as possible. I'm not in his head so I don't know
In retrospect...even though I didn't agree with people on this at the time... I think it might have been a good idea to run Johnson out there a bit when we were running the ball so much against Akron, Miami and EMU. He's got better legs and would have added a dimension to the offense and gotten him used to game speed.
We definitley agree that Clawson as a lot riding on 2013. QB has 4 years in the system. We return a ton of starters and the guys stepping in for the guys we lost have been here for 2-3 years now. I don't know how closely you followed BGSU over the years, but on paper we have more offensive talent than we did in 2003 and 2004 when we were routinely hanging 50+ on people. This team needs to take that next step if DC has any hope of scoring a decent BCS gig.

Agreed on some of your points but no way is this team more talented on offense than the 2003-2004 teams. Just look at these names...Flipper wrote:I don't know how closely you followed BGSU over the years, but on paper we have more offensive talent than we did in 2003 and 2004 when we were routinely hanging 50+ on people.

Re: BG should recruit a JUCO QB this year
Care to elaborate Flip? How does a team that finished near last in the conference in most offensive categories project to have more talent than 2 of the most potent offenses we have ever had.
I could see Gallon being a guy that could eventually surpass Magner and Sanders but I will take just about every other starter on those 03-04 teams. Pope over Samuel included, he was awesome catching the ball.

Re: BG should recruit a JUCO QB this year
Those are all obviously great players, but I'm not going to say it's not even close. Hawkins for example had 318 receiving yards in 04...fewer than Ryan Burbrink had this year.Rollo83 wrote:Agreed on some of your points but no way is this team more talented on offense than the 2003-2004 teams. Pope and Lane were great backs. But, Samuel is a better rusher than Pope and Lane and while not as good a receiving back as Pope, Samuel is a very good receiver. Averaged 9 yards a catch this year.
Gallon is going to be an absolute monster next year, inch taller and 20 pounds heavier than Sanders. Showed the same play making ability as any of those guys.
Now as a group the receivers probably aren't as good, Sharon and Sanders were a lethal 1 / 2 punch. Stokes was disappointing, Joplin is up and down.
But, I'm excited to see guys like Jermal Hosley and Herve Coby teamed up with him next year. Not to mention Alex Bayer. Those 03 / 04 teams never had a talented 6'5 250 pound tight end to throw to.
The offensive line next year is going to be very good, maybe not as good as those teams. But, still very good. Cooper, Huettel, "Chief", and Flewellyn are 4 really good linemen all returning.
Suisham wasn't exactly an all-American at BG. In 04 he was 14/20, although he made A LOT of extra points. Just for argument's sake, Tyler Tate was 7/10 this year...
The big difference is Josh Harris, Omar Jacobs vs Matt Schilz. That's not even close. Next year's offense COULD be great, but it all comes down to the QB position.
The skill guys next year with an Omar or Josh Harris at QB would be ridiculous. Conversely those 03 /04 teams with Matt Schilz at QB would not have been offensive juggernauts.
Re: BG should recruit a JUCO QB this year
PJ Pope sophomore season > Samuel sophomore season. He gained about 3,000 yards from scrimmage his sophomore and junior years. If not for getting hurt his senior year he would have had three 1,000 yard seasons. Pope was the stud of those teams.
QB's aren't worth comparing.
Magner, Sharon, Sanders and Hawkins all day over Gallon, Joplin, Burbrink and Stokes.
I'll take the O line anchored by Scotty M and that was way more versatile.
Suisham was up and down but overall had a good career.

Re: BG should recruit a JUCO QB this year
The top end talent at RB is just as good...the 03/04 group went two deep. We have more depth at RB than at any time I can recall. Givens was pretty far down the depth chart most of the year and in terms of pure talent, he's as good as Pope or Lane.
Gallon is physically a cut above anyone from that group. He's a 6-4 215lb WR who can outrun MAC DB's. Joplin is a very talented kid who gained consistency as the season wore on. Burbrink is a real nice slot guy. Add Heath Jackson and Hosley (if they're healthy) along with Stokes, Coby and the guys like James White, Greene and Delk who haven't been able to see the field and the top to bottom talent is better.
TE isn't even close, but then the 03/04 teams rarely used a TE.
Schilz has yet to show the mastery of our offense that Harris and Jacobs showed running theirs. In fairness to Schilz....I think the offense Clawson and Ruggiero are running is a bit more complex than the one Brandon ran and the current staff doesn't seem to want to open it up like the other guys did...but the QB play hasn't been where it was.
OL is coming along...I like the Chief a lot...but I would def give 03/04 an edge there.

Samuel has rushed for 1700+ yards despite missing several games due to injury. He is likely to get 3500 - 4000 rushing and 500 receiving yards for his career.kdog27 wrote:PJ Pope sophomore season > Samuel sophomore season. You're comparing careers of guys to freshmen and sophomores.
I think flipper was saying if this group progresses the way they have in the past they can be as good as those teams.
Which I agree 100% with.
Re: BG should recruit a JUCO QB this year
At least 8 of the guys I mentioned earlier from 03-04 made it to an NFL roster at some point (training camp, preseason, regular season).
Outside of Chris Jones, I don't see another one from the current team that will make an NFL camp this year or next.
