Freeman has coached both OL and DL...but he's now the "assistant to the assistant" on the OL. As it sits, we have no OC, no DC, no RB coach and no DL coach and we have two guys coaching DB's and two guys coaching the OL.

This strikes me as being somewhat odd....
All I can come up with is McCloud. Not that coaching receivers is more natural for McCloud than defense, but that McCloud is more of a position coach than a coordinator. That's my best guess.
Or ... Babers is know for saying weird things in press conferences. Like the post game conference after the Indiana win. He might have said something weird again and we're all reading too much into it.

The whole thing is just weird. Hopefully these guys are on 1 year deals and BG redid their contracts, because if not almost 30% of the staff budget will be tied up in a WR and assistant OL Coach.

Also it would be nice to get a few coaches in here before the recruiting dead period ends, Wednesday...

Gilbert and Mattox were the so-called "natives" of the offense having learned it straight from Briles at Houston. Lynch and Lewis picked it up at Eastern Illinois while McCloud and Freeman practiced against it on defense. The offense looks like it will stay the same with Babers calling plays just like last year.

The defensive coordinator role is the biggest question. Do we promote Kaufman, who is arguably our best recruiter but run the risk of keeping a system that didn't always work? Do we promote Monroe, also an excellent recruiter and someone who could potentially bring back some of the Clawson/Elko philosophies and pressure packages? Do we go outside and hire a combo defensive line coach/defensive coordinator and start over schematically?

There's also a proposal before the NCAA that would allow teams to add one additional full-time coach, so the DL coach could be a separate hire from the DC. Dino's at the AFCA Convention where interviews usually happen so hopefully we should know something soon.

Another coach available is Brian Rock, who coaxed a lot out of very limited talent at Kent as their offensive coordinator and was there during the 11 win year. He also has BG ties.

Chip Kelly specifically said that he hires coaches unfamiliar with his offense when compiling his staff. They still run his stuff but he likes the perspectives they bring and their ideas about attacking defenses that he might not consider. In a similar vein, we shouldn't limit ourselves to the tiny circle of Baylor people in making coaching staff hires. We should find the best coach, not the best fit.
