What kid wants to go away to college at a small town atmosphere and would pick BG over OU or Miami?Roll Along! wrote:The best coaches turn perceived negatives into positives. I will pay attention if they get good and won't if they don't. I do know coaching at BG is a terrible job; very few fans, very few resources, terrible environment, tough place to live unless you're from here, tough place to recruit to due to weather and city size. Former success has almost nothing to do with the current product. Recruits are not coming here because BG won the MAC title when they were 13.
Very few fans -- Just as many fans as most other MAC schools, and that's despite 3 wins a season for the last 3 years
Terrible environment -- Compared to most of the other MAC schools? No difference. In fact, way better environment than places like Akron that have an oversized stadium that is cavernous and feels empty no matter how many fans they put in there
Tough place to live unless you're from here -- Don't know what that means, but I didn't grow up here. And I love it.
Tough place to recruit due to weather -- Some of the greatest spring, summer and fall in the country. Ask those Texas kids how those 110 degree summers feel.
Tough to recruit due to city size -- Unless you love small town atmosphere.
Recruits won't come because BG won the MAC title when they were 13 -- Recent success is better than no success (Akron, UMass, Charlotte, Kansas). And the age of 13 is right in those kids wheel house for sports watching. They know more about BG than Akron or UMass or the others that win 2 games every season.
All of it is just excuses. And a great coach won't let those excuses be reasons why you can't win. They will turn them into positive momentum to build success. Just look around. MAC Championship teams (or at least competing for championships) all fall long. A structure in place that breeds success in the department. Graduation rates at the top of the MAC. Community service that is bar none. Opportunity for national exposure that is way higher than the other mid major conferences. The entire recipe is RIGHT HERE for success. There's NOTHING holding anyone back from winning at BG.

Have you been to the tractor pull lately? City kids everywhere.Globetrotter wrote:I am not sure an 18 year old from a big city is super excited about the Tractor pull and conservative politicians. And nothing to do on the weekends.Flipper wrote:BG is a great place to live....

You're his agent? You know how in demand he was? I'm not sure I want to contemplate what gets you excited...

Most 18 year olds don't give two shits about local politics. The tractor pull is a big assed party ...18 year olds LOVE big parties. So far as the nothing to do on the weekend bit...if you're a friendless social misfit...that might be true. Otherwise..IIRC BG was a s**t ton of fun from Thurs night to Sunday morningGlobetrotter wrote:I am not sure an 18 year old from a big city is super excited about the Tractor pull and conservative politicians. I'd bet $1,000 Joan Niesen, the writer, has never seen a Bowling Green or Boston College football game for the past 3 years. She read the press release, did about 45 seconds of googling and got her paragraph in before moving on to Charlotte. Her opinion reeks of ignorance and stupidity.
-The Auburn situation in 2012 was a mess and he can hardly be faulted for not turning water into wine over the course of the 8 months he was there, and the Auburn fan base is pissed off at the world pretty much 24/7/365, so I'm not sure where she was going citing fan opinion.
-His offense scored 31 ppg his last year at VT, markedly up from when he took over, and his VT tenure included putting up 35 against Ohio State in Ohio State in 2014 when their defense was good and they won the national championship. Did Joan consult the VT fans after that one? And how were Notre Dame's offenses when Urban was the receivers coach?
-She notes Boston College's offensive improvement coincided with a really good player joining the team. In other breaking news, New England became really good when Tom Brady became the starter. What exactly does she think coaches do?
-She notes we haven't had a winning season since 2015. Wow, a whole 3 years! Why is that something worthy of note? It's not like some monumentally horrendous EMU/Kent State-like losing streak dating back decades.
Her opinion couldn't be more meaningless. Loeffler made each of his units better from the time he arrived to the time he left and he's being hired as a head coach to oversee the entire program. We've won before, we'll win again and Joan Niesen will have something new about BGSU appear in her next 10 second google search.

Goodness. None of these opportunities are better.Globetrotter wrote:CMU just hired the former head coach at Florida. I think they are doing ok.Tony4BG wrote:Florida St #114 scoring offense
No way BG was least attractive opening!
Akron, CMU and UMass below BG.
Akron is a major city that people might want to be in.
Umass is the same. https://www.gazettenet.com/UMass-AD-Bam ... l-21991774" target="_blank
Akron? They've never been good at football. A stink hangs over that place like our basketball program. What coach would want to take that on? If Terry Bowden had seven years and he couldn't turn it around, taking that job would be a pretty big career risk.
UMass? They aren't even in a conference. Whether they even stay FBS honestly seems a little unclear. The whole strategy appears to be to tread water with a heavy dollop of body bag games until an opening emerges in the American. (Which might not happen.) That's a terrible opportunity.
Central Michigan? Maybe that's as about good as Bowling Green. Maybe. But it isn't better.
Re: From si.com on all the new coaching hires
Florida had no offense for 3 years under Mac which is the primary reason they fired him. Alabama also changed virtually their entire offensive scheme after he left. And while this is impossible to know from our vantage point, it doesn't appear teams were clamoring for him to be their head coach.
Re: From si.com on all the new coaching hires
UMass? Since getting booted from the MAC, they have been relegated to a punching bag and highlight reel fodder. They are the team you play if you're from the SEC before your big rival, but since they are FBS you don't have to deal with the criticism that you play Wofford before playing Auburn.

BG is small, but it's not a "small town." BG is a College-town. But for the existence of the University, it would be no more than a crossroad village.Globetrotter wrote:What kid wants to go away to college at a small town atmosphere and would pick BG over OU or Miami?Roll Along! wrote:The best coaches turn perceived negatives into positives. The appeal of going to school in a college-town is a factor for many high school students. Ann Arbor, State College and Tuscaloosa are college-towns. Oxford (OH and MS), Athens (OH and GA), Kent, and BG are college towns. Akron, Toledo, Dayton, Youngstown, and Cincinnati are not. . .
