i can see the eagles taking a matt jones or pray that mark clayton falls to them at #31. i don't see them not taking a WR in the first round.
Even if TO holds out during the pre-season he will be there for the regular season.

So, for getting return on their investment, I think they would be better off taking Edwards, if they don't sucker someone into taking the pick off thier hands.
John Clayton reported that the 49ers have all but settled on Braylon Edwards and talks between them and Alex Smith are all but dead at the moment.
That would be ideal for the Browns. I think Miami still goes with the Brown, and Smith falls to Cleveland. I'm not 100% positive that Smith is going to be a star, but anytime there is a QB that is that smart and knows so much football, I'm interested. The kid graduated college in 2 years!

If the Niners would take Edwards and Miami can't trade out, I would bet on the Dolphins taking Smith. They kinda need a QB too. So with Edwards and Smith both gone (the top two on the Browns board), they say screw it and take the defensive guy they want anyway, Merriman.
BTW, if this all happens like this, I am sending this thread to ESPN and demanding that I get Mel Kiper's job next season. 8) (he can keep the hair, )

#3 overall just seems so high for Merriman, but you know I like him. I'd have PacMan, Rolle, & Merriman tied for my favorite Defensive player in this draft. If I'm the Browns I prefer Merriman, because hybrid OLB is a huge need for Cleveland.
It still seems like he could be had later, but if you cannot find a viabl trade partner then I guess you take him. It just seems to me that if he's who you really want you could trade down to #7 or #8 and still get him. I mean if he's #1 on your board at #3, but you know he can be had a few picks later, why not just trade down even if you only gain a 2nd or 3rd rounder?

Just a 2nd or 3rd rounder in this draft would be pretty valuable, especially to the Browns who need depth. I'm sure if someone comes offering on draft day, they'll trade. Right now they could be holding out for more, but they'll accept that in this draft if that is the case where they can get thier guy for sure a few spots down.
hammb I coulnd't agree more. BUT, I think there is no trade partner to be had. This draft is unique this year. There isn't any consesus as to who the first three/five/ten picks will be. Because of that, I think it is safe to take anybody you have ranked high on your board that helps your team the most. You don't have to take a certain player at a certain pick just becuase that is what everyone says should be done. Ususally it is pretty boring on actual draft day because it is all set up to go a certain way. This years will be a lot more interesting because of the uncertainty.
I am for picking the proverbial best player available. BUT I always think you have to consider what you are gonna get later as well and the needs of you team. You need to rank the "Athletes" but then also give them a value associated to what your team needs as well. In the Browns case, lets say you give Edwards a grade of 100 and Merriman a grade of 92. Using that, Edwards in your pick. But I think you still need to apply a factor for your teams need. So, DL/LB may get a 100 because that is what the Browns need to most and WR might get a 90. So putting the two together, Edwards gets a rating of 900 (100 * 90) while Merriman is now a 920 (92 * 100). Under my plan Merriman is then more valuable to your team than Edwards is.

I think that old draft pick value chart can go out the window this year. I think you could assign the same number of value points to pick #1 and pick #10. If the Browns aren't willing to accept that fact, they won't be able to trade down. You have to set you sights a little lower this year in what you should expect in return for the #3 pick.

FWIW, just read Len Pasquerelli's latest on ESPN.com and he specifically stated the case of Edwards and Smith being off the board and what the Browns would do. He says they pick Mike Williams since he thinks Savage doesn't think there is a defensive player in the draft that warrants the #3 pick.

Wow, that is suprising. I would think that Rolle would be worth it. He is good, and if you look at the track record, "The U" can produce pro players. Williams wouldn't be a bad pick either. But if I was Savage, I would listen to my coach.
OK, John Clayton of ESPN addressed the same situation and here is what he says:
" If the draft goes the wrong way for the Browns, they may have to just take a defensive player such as Adam "Pac-Man" Jones, Shawne Merriman or David Pollack and stun those watching the draft."

David Pollack!?!? I love what he's done at Georgia. He's got a high motor and is always making plays. However, for the NFL he has size issues that he cannot control. He's about 6'2 and has real short arms. I think he could make a good 3-4 OLB, but most people have him projected in the 15-25 range. I cannot imagine taking him at #3 overall.
If you get him at 30 he could be a steal, but if you take him at 3...that's ju
