From ESPN.com's Ivan Maisel's Three Point Stance:

Post by Warthog »

Tuesday, May 10
1. John Lovett, fired as Clemson defensive coordinator last fall, surfaces at Louisiana Tech in March, stays long enough to coach spring practice, then leaves the other day for Bowling Green. I know coaching is a love-'em-and-leave-'em business, but I'll never understand why universities don't flex more muscle and demand that coaches stick around.

Maisel actually co-authored a great book that spent a week inside the dynamics of the Alabama/Auburn football rivalry that included several references to Coach Lovett, who was the DC at Auburn at the time. (Auburn won the game)

To borrow a popular phrase from our MAC Championship women's basketball coach Curt Miller, I'm ecstatic over this hire.

Lovett has proven to be a top architect of defenses througout the course of his career. He's a name coach that will bring tons of recruiting contacts in the south. After facing SEC and ACC coordinators, I'm confident he can handle Novak's run packages and Bancroft High's screen game. As others have said, this really speaks highly of BG to be able to attract a coach of this caliber. Promoting from within is fine, but when a candidate of this caliber comes up you've got to jump on it.

In regards to his movement, once was during a transition when his head coach, Tommy Tuberville, left Ole Miss to go to Auburn. It's part of the profession. If anything, at this point in his career, it appears he might be looking for some stability. I think he's the final piece to a championship puzzle.

I read yesterday that in Urban Meyer's contract at Florida he can leave at any time and will not have to pay a cent. If he get's fired he will be paid $1 million for every year left on his contract.

Now that is a contract I need to get my hands on.

Jim Rome was talking about how Myer gets more than Ron Zook, he was basically saying, "Yea duh! Of course Urban Myer gets more, he's a better coach!"

Well said, Joe. This is gonna be one heck of a year in Falcon Land.
But it bodes so well for our future in recruiting and sustaining success thru the years.

Has anyone asked the question of why would this guy leave after a few weeks? Its not exactly like BG is a step up from La. Tech

What? Urban Meyer went from BG to Utah to FL in the space of two years. Gregg Brandon put in two years here as the head guy and got offered a $500 gig at UNLV. BGSU has been ranked at one point for each of the past three seasons, won two straight bowl games and been on national TV right around 10 times over two years. Has La Tech done anything even remotely as notable of late?

BG is a LARGE step up from La Tech

Ah, there's that school spirit shining through again!

Unless you're stuck in the Tim Rattay days, BG is quite the step up. Admittedly, maybe not a step up in the POTENTIAL they could have, but at this very moment, mid-May 2005, if you were offered the BG job or the LA Tech job, with all things being equal, which one do you take? If you don't say BG, you're either nuts, or related to Terry Bradshaw and/or Karl Malone.

Interestingly enough, while fishing around for some Techsters' takes on Lovett, I found this thread. Just the first post alone seems like an awfully familiar situation:

I feel bad for them that our offer was able to double what they were going to pay him. We're not exactly known for being able to break the bank.

I'm guessing that's hyperbole and unfounded speculation.

If the money is equal, Bowling Green is a better opportunity than Louisiana Tech.

And, considering the urgency with which he left a job he had only started a few weeks before, it may not have been about the money or the better opportunity. Maybe he wasn't getting along with the head coach.

Or maybe he wants the chance to finally be a head coach? Everyone knows that Brandon is only going to be here for another year or two, maybe he things if he can have any impact on our defence that he may have a shot at the HC position when it opens up?

If La. Tech winds up with a run in the polls the next few years, teams in all sports across the nation might BEG coaches to take/return to jobs at BG after only a few weeks on the job...

THANK YOU! I was reading this whole thread hoping that someone might pick up on that! This guy has been a coordinator for quite a while and I'm sure he is itching to get his hands on the reigns of an established program to prove his head coaching prowess. He may have had the opportunity to be a head coach down in Louisiana, but a school like that (in terms of football) isn't exactly the kind of program one can readily make a splash in. BG is an established football school, and no matter what the money situation was between the two schools I HIGHLY suspect that this is the reason Lovett is here.
