Looking at that pic made me realize how barren that south endzone and how out of place the too-tall scoreboard will look. I wonder what is next for the south endzone? Can they lower the board to make the video board appear larger? Will they add some semi-permanent seating? A stage for concerts?

Are the Falcon Club tent and bookstore tent gone? Those fill the endzones pretty well.

I'm not sure. I remember when the Sebo was still the SAC one of the areas overlooking the field was dubbed a "hospitality area" to which I assumed the Falcon Club would move to, but maybe not. That might just be for real big wigs.

Even if the FC and Bookstore remain tents, no matter how nice they are they are still tents mirroring a pretty nice new building.

Even MORE progress - looks like they have the East sideline down now, too. Unbelievable!

The cam and the pics DO NOT do justice to the process. I had the opportunity to see the turf this afternoon. Needless to say, if the Freak and the Freaklings are ecstatic over what they've seen via the cam and the pics on this thread, they will be absolutely overwhelmed when they see it live and in living color!

Great job by installation crew!

How do they do it?

Post by Class of 61 »

A thought occured to me as I've watched the SEBO cam view of the turf installation.....how do they FASTEN the turf into the gravel...Looks like I saw some sort of steel pin on one of the close up pix taken by someone...and they're definitely rolling the sidelines down as I watched today. But does anyone know exactly how they hold the turf in place? #-o

I've had this discussion with others. I don't think it IS "fastened" down. I think the added weight of the Grind substance is plenty to hold it down. Like a floating floor in your house, it's got to be allowed to expand and contract w/ temperature and climate changes. Fastening it in any way would be asking for stretching, tearing and other damage.

Think of the mass of the turf just right now. All of that is essentially one piece since it's been stitched together. How many tons must that weigh? It's not going anywhere... add the grind on top of that and it's permanent.

Of course, I could be wrong. ;-)

The Nike grind might also serve to mute the orange a tad. It's looking a tad "psychedelic" right now.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Grant, thanks for that info. It makes sense I guess; just wondered after watching them roll the various areas.

They're laying out the yard line numbers right now in the southwest quadrant.

For the numbers, do they paint the turf, or do they cut out the shape of the number and then fill it in with white turf (which is what I think they do with the hash marks)

No clue. Have been operating under the assumption that it will be the same process as the hash marks... but I guess we'll find out. I'll be over there this evening and can find out in person.
