I was too young to know any better. Thats interesting though. He was certainly succesfull against them.
I remember from when I was like 15-16 a guy named something like Frank Ittich got brought in last minute to fight a guy as a replacement. He was in like a Daniel LaRussa Karate geigh(sic) had an awful stache and spent most of his time on the ground trying to not get beat.
I forgot that UFC used to be a tournament. I would definitely watch if that was the case still. 4 fights in one night would be awesome. Kumata Fighter....Nut su cow...Nut su cow....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMS3EuQNSd4
Fraud might be too strong a word...wearing a gi and fighting guys who had never fought someone wearing one was a bit unfair. I don't know...I wasn't following MMA that closely then...I do recall a number of people saying the tournament was basically designed to sell Gracie BJJ to the world by setting Royce up with beatable guys...but who really knows?

It looks like Akron is set to hire Terry Bowden. He has been at Northern Alabama for the last few years and has done pretty well with them. He was early on a hit at Auburn but quickly faded away, then spent some time writing columns for Yahoo Sports. I guess it's an OK hire, just took forever to do. I suppose nobody really wanted to coach at Akron maybe.
Regardless ... my favorite Terry Bowden column ... http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/n ... ting020507

Certainly a big name hire. Why is he the bottom of the barrell? Once head coach at Auburn sounds pretty good to me. Is there more to the story that I am forgetting?
Penn State is the only school without a coach currently.
Well, Bowden definitely has his skeletons in the closet but did do a pretty damn good job at Auburn. I guess we'll find out if he can win at Akron. Most of the Zips fans on the ESPN board are claiming multiple MAC titles are waiting. I certainly wouldn't go that far. ;0)

I think that is pretty good hire. Had some awesome years at Auburn early on there. His name recognition alone will help in recruiting. Bottom of the barrel? Not sure how you figure that.

Thats what I thought right away. Going with a failed top level BCS coach has worked at OU. I saw it as a huge win. A big name to go into a great new stadium in what is a pretty major market near 4 very major markets (Pitt, Cleveland, Cbus and Buffalo)...seems like they have momentum going upward.
In his fifth year...the year that's supposed be THE year a new coach has his program in place, the team fell apart on the field and off. He quit because he thought he was going to be fired...how successful was he if they were going to fire him that quickly when tings started going south? He hasn't been a D1 coach in almost 15 years and he's walking into possibly the worst situation within the FBS.
They got turned down by a DII coach who had been at Akron for 20 years as a player and an assitant, they got turned down by Scott Loeffler...they got turned down by everybody until they finally asked the guy who got run out of his last D1 job in 1998...that to me is the bottom of the barrell. Yeah..he had some nice early years at Auburn...but if you look at his tenure there, it looks a lot like what GB did here.
Everything is Gregg Brandon's fault

Bowden seems a capable coach, but he needs a place to prove himself and brighten up his tarnished reputation.
Akron has become a tough place to to find a good coach and they need to take something of a risk.
It will take time, but if Bowden can produce a winner, he'll find another gig soon enough and will have made the position more attractive to the next candidate.

I would not say Solich failed at Nebraska. He was not Tom Osbourne, whom he replaced, thus they wanted him gone. He was 58-19 @ Nebraska
