This is correct. It's a budgeted expense.jpfalcon09 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 19, 2025 11:42 amTurf replacement should be a budgeted capital expense by the department every "XX" number of years (assuming ten since that's how long the last surface lasted). If it's not then there are way bigger problems going on. I'd be floored if it isn't replaced in the spring/summer.guest44 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 19, 2025 11:34 amHere is an idea. Have the coaches and administrators start chipping in towards the new turf. The longer you have coached at BGSU the more you should be willing to give back. It's much more productive than whining about resources.jpfalcon09 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 19, 2025 11:27 amI'm dating myself here, but I maintained the grass field at my high school in 2004 and 2005 (Ag Science for the win) and it was rather labor intensive. Mowing, line painting, patching/re-sodding, treatments to guard against disease, etc. Turf is easier to manage if you take care of it (brushing, air rating, raking, sweeping every 4-6 weeks). The Doyt turf is missing a lot of colored fibers which is why it looks terrible at the midfield logo and endzones. The infill looked like it was clumping up from the rain as well. I can't imagine it's a fun surface to play on at the moment.hammb wrote: ↑Wed Nov 19, 2025 8:27 am I will never not be pissed off about that turf. It looks like s**t. I imagine it plays like s**t.
IT was sold as this panacea of how much money we'd save to not have actual grass to maintain, while at the same time they replaced acres of gravel parking lots with grass (don't get me wrong, I actually love the grassy areas for tailgating and the soccer tournaments, etc).
I very much question the numbers that say turf is cheaper than grass when it's life expectancy is only 10 yrs. Sure maybe they play a few more HS games on it now, but I can't imagine they're bringing much money in. The data is pretty sound that grass is a safer playing surface. Players prefer grass. Fans prefer grass.

Sean Ellis' dad was a good guy...hung out with him at tailgates back in the day.Tricky_Falcon wrote: ↑Wed Nov 19, 2025 9:11 am Ah memories https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UOZwFhxYkY
That grass field got badly flooded...IIRC...because they damaged the drainage system while building the Sebo center. Turf def needs to be replaced
Najm def had an issue with the happy feet last night. Did not look settled the entire game. Having to rely on your 4th string clipboard holder to QB the team sucks. Assuming we have no defections (ha) in the off season, we look ok at RB and TE (Harris is really good) . Going to need to overhaul the OL and the WR room...and I do not think we even have one QB we can count on.
And we need a new OC
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Big Bird! That was the first home game I missed in something like 5 yrs because I was in Vegas for a work conference. Watched it from the sports book but made some cash on the under knowing it was gonna be a bad weather game.Flipper wrote: ↑Wed Nov 19, 2025 2:29 pmSean Ellis' dad was a good guy...hung out with him at tailgates back in the day.Tricky_Falcon wrote: ↑Wed Nov 19, 2025 9:11 am Ah memories https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UOZwFhxYkY

That natural grass was always a fantastic playing surface. Sure it got crazy when we got dumped on that day but for the most part our grass was great.
I'm sure maintaining a grass field is harder and costs money. I doubt it's more expensive than buying new turf every 10 yrs.
Either way football is better on grass and if the costs are in the same ballpark it's a no brainer. Hell Cochrane's grass is fantastic. Just have those guys take care of the doyt turf too.
Re: vs. Akron (11/18)
A big issue with grass is the unexpected weather related costs. A mud bowl game can basically destroy a field for the rest of the season since you can't re-sod during. It also limits practice space, other uses, etc. It really is more cost effective to have turf. That's why even the smallest high schools have gone that direction, and college baseball, as well. I am also very pro grass for any sports, but turf does make logistical sense.hammb wrote: ↑Wed Nov 19, 2025 6:34 pmBig Bird! That was the second of two bad weather games with Miami too. The prior year in Oxford the game was delayed almost three hours due to tornado warnings. UAO did a student trip down for that game and we stayed for the entirety of it, didn't get back to BG until like 3:30am. I'll never forget the mud game though. Quite possibly the worst conditions I've been in for a football game. I think a few years later was the fog game with Miami.hammb wrote: ↑Wed Nov 19, 2025 6:34 pmBig Bird! Yep, fog bowl was in '10. I sat thru every minute of the mud bowl, soaking wet and freezing, just to see it end that way.........then we lose the fog bowl to them on the last play. The Miami Whammie was working overtime in those games. At least we did beat them in the tornado bowl. I think we may have blocked a couple punts that made the difference in that one.
I too, really wish we still played on grass, but understand the practical side of that dictates the fake stuff.
Aside from finding a QB, I think the other huge component of the rebuild effort needs to start with the offensive line being a priority. The line was supposed to be a strength of this team coming into the season and they clearly underperformed and it shows in the results. It also probably has something to do, at least to some degree, with the fact that we have needed 4 QBs this year. Having a good QB doesn't help much of there's no line to protect him and he ends up spending most of the season on the sidelines in sweatpants. Cincinnati Bungles can attest to that.
