I would take Harris over Jacobs every time. Omar has much better physical skills, no question. However, there is just something off about Omar. He can't seem to will his team to a win like Josh could.JWEIII wrote:Very close to the 2003 results, AND the 2004 team had a better quarterback.
Which brings me back to my point. Just because we are losing some great players (specifically the best quarterback in BG history) is no reason to think we will collapse next year. Remember after the 2003 season we lost the "best quaterback in BG history" and we were just fine.
Best of Luck to Omar
foolish
Omar would be foolish to leave school early. What is the precedent for MAC players leaving early and succeeding in the NFL? (I'm asking this because I'm not sure...Obviously, Big Ben did it after a huge amount of success and I was pretty surprised when he did). Omar hasn't had the same type of team success that Big Ben did, and I'm not sure he has the poise Ben has either.
From what I am hearing, Omar figures to be no better than a middle second round pick. What kind of money does a late second round/early third round pick get? I have no idea, but I can't imagine it is crazy, life changing money. You only leave early if there is life changing money involved. Otherwise, you stay and try to improve your status.

I'll argue that till the day I die. Omar is a better pro prospect because he's got the size that Josh didn't have. He's also more accurate passer.1987alum wrote:Some would argue that point.JWEIII wrote:AND the 2004 team had a better quarterback.
But I cannot bring myself to believe that those things make him a better QB. Josh was a better leader, a better scrambler, better against the blitz, and just had "it".
If I'm building a pro team I'll take Omar because, unfortunately, Josh's height and erratic arm were too much to overcome; but if I'm choosing a guy to lead my college team I'll take Josh Harris any day of the week...especially Saturdays.
The stats just don't support that position. But I see your point, you could give the edge to Harris because won... the... ummm....BGGrad01 wrote:

Because he won the MAC West division title? Won every home game his last two seasson? Won two games against Big Ten opponents? Won 4 of 5 games against BCS conference opponents? Won a game against Toledo?JWEIII wrote:The stats just don't support that position. But I see your point, you could give the edge to Harris because won... the... ummm....BGGrad01 wrote:

And, FWIW, here's the history lesson on BG's tendency to have winning and losing seasons in bunches...

How did this turn into Omar v. Josh?
If the issue is the coaching, as '87 suggested, that's one thing.
But my point is that let's not punt on next year due to the loss of players. We have lost great players before and were find.
Besides, the way you all make it sound we should be better off witout Omar.

Obviously I'm not as optomistic about an AT led offense as you are, but the facts are we are going to be just a shell of the offense we have built over the last 3 seasons next year without Omar. Personally I think AT has a better arm throwing the deep ball than what Harris did but AT is also alot smaller and nowhere near as durable and is even more erratic with his throws and reads than J5.JWEIII wrote:Looking back, I see that most of my few posts are negative (gasp!). However, I am upbeat about next year. Even without Omar!
Most of us were ready to run up the white flag the season after Josh Harris left, too. But the 2004 team was probably better than the 2003 team - who saw that comming? Some have been hard on Brandon recently, but his teams score points.
Turner will be fine. Turner is more like Harris and I bet they go back to more of a run-the-ball-misdirection-spread-option style of offense (Harris-style if you will). With Jacobs it was percistion passing supported by a run game. Harris was a major threat to pull it down and run for 30 yards. He was a big part of the running game in general. From what we saw this year I think Turner fits that system well, and we know Brandon can run it.
Even without Omar, I say they average over 30 points per game. I think it will just have to be a totally different style offense.
Change is good.
If you read some of Brandon's old quotes, he wasn't sure about this Jacobs fellow either.
As far as the qb situation ,I'm interested to see how good this Tyler Sheehan kid is. If this Sheehan kid can show the passing skills similier to Omar's in the slightest than he could pass AT for starting qb, unless our O-line gets even bigger and tougher and more smashmouth and can dominate the game with a rushing attack that we havent' seen here at BG ever.
O-line depth and strength is also very key here as well as thats were all offenses start from anyway. Turner has just a ton of work to do on his field vison and reads and I dont see him improving by such a huge margin in just 9 months or so. It could happen but I'm not betting on it. But if we can run the ball all of a sudden for 40 times a game efficiantly like never before than maybe AT can still be succesfull running a mostly option/wishbone offense with little passing. But that again depends on how the O-line grows next year.

I think that we all need to wait and see what Omar does before we all start worrying about what we are going to do without him. All of this talk is a mute point if he decides to stay and lead this team for one more year. Too many of you think he is out the door before he really is. He has just opened it up and put his head out to see what is there.
I really don't think that the offense should really be the point of concern when talking about next years team. I can think of two other areas that are more pressing right now. The lack of defense and upcoming talent, and the lack of a special teams game is a heck of a lot more important at this point. Coach Brandon has spent his whole time here basically recruiting offensive talent, there's no need to worry about them. Throw in what I believe is a great schedule, and there are your concerns for next year. I'll wait to say good luck to our quarterback after he declares.

Miami did that to alot of teams that season. If they had not laid an egg in Iowa City, they would have finished #7 or #8 in the country.CapitalFalcon wrote:True...And he also got the S**T beat out of him TWICE by Miami in the same season.Flipper wrote:Harris won the West by beating NIU and UT in the same year when both were VERY good football teams....
I'm sorry that I started this argument of Omar versus Josh. The truth is that we have been very fortunate in the quarterback department for the last 5 years. I hope Omar comes back because I believe that it would do him good, but I wouldn't blame him one bit for taking the money.
