That being said, I'm stunned that Brandon would tell a freshman he has a shot at starting. Note the kid said starting, not just playing.

Looking toward 2006, as things stand now, I'd have to pencil in White, Winovich and Briggs as the starters at LB. Now, Briggs played both LB and DE, so who knows that means. Then we have the possibility of Winovich moving to another position (likely DE).

Other names in play - Will Myles (converted from DB), Scott Goodwin (limited PT last year), John Haneline, Adrian Baker.

I would much rather see Briggs with his hand on the ground, getting after the quarterback. I think you could pinpoint QB pressure as the biggest area in which the D needs to improve next season. I only remember one game in which we got consistent pressure on the QB -- Miami. Even in that game, almost all the pressure came from the edges (like Briggs). We rarely saw a push up the middle from our DTs last year. We really need some of those young, bigger DT prospects to step up in the next couple of years, as well as developing the edge rushers like Briggs.

The biggest thing I want to see our linebackers, whoever that might be, do next year is tackle somebody. Just once, I want to see a BG linebacker fill a hole by himself and form tackle a runningback, planting said back about 2 feet deep in the Doyt grass. I think I would cry if I saw that happen.

I like Briggs moving between DE & LB; gives Lovett a lot of options. Another reason - he's still kinda spindly to be a full-time DE, especially with Devon Parks on the other side. I love Parks; he has a non-stop motor, but to have two undersized DEs is just asking to get run on. And it only puts a bigger spotlight on our undersized DTs.

I'm concerned that I don't see any big DTs/NTs on our recruiting lists. I'd like to see us recruit one BFP, if only to stuff the middle on short yardage situations.

The Meyer Graduating classes that have led us to our success included players from around the country, as do UT's. The weakest classes we have are Ohio-heavy.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not against recruiting nationally. But, the reason why BG's Ohio-heavy classes are weak is because BG doesn't land much top quality in-state talent. If you look at Rivals, Miami has already landed 3 of Ohio's top 50.

**I should add that I doubt BG is ignoring Ohio. I am simply pointing-out that it would be nice to land some of the kids that go to WVU, BC, Pitt, or the Big Ten (outside of OSU, UM, and Penn St. - I'm trying to be realistic here).
On the contrary, I have sensed that we are preferring to recruit Ohio over the rest of the country, and I don't understand why. Yes, it would be nice, though not likely, to beat WVU and BC out for an Ohio kid. But let's not take Ohio leftovers over a kid from Georgia just because we're from Ohio or because its easier.

Our LBs were, collectively, a disappointing bunch last year. As pointed out elsewhere, speed was a real issue and that's why we saw a few DBs moved to LB. It's probably why Brandon is talking to Winovich about moving to yet another position.

It was probably something like....."We have 4 seniors at the position so spots will be open next year. I am not afraid to start a true freshman at one of those positions. We started a true freshman this eyar at Corenrback. If you earn it you could be starting enxt year for us."

I think Lovett will be doing just that with Briggs. In my crystal ball I see a lot more pre-snap shifting from our D next year now that Lovett will be able to instill his philosophies from day 1. If we can get a productive Leinenger back, along with one of the young DTs up in the 290-300 range, I think it would have a huge impact on the defense as a whole.

It's probably just the offseason talking, but I'm optimistic about our defense next year. They sure are gonna get a baptism by fire anyway. Some revenge on Mr. Calhoun perhaps? :)

Quick count on non-seniors listed on the roster found on the athletic department's Web site. May not be perfect, but gives you general idea of where our players are coming from...

Ohio: 44
Michigan: 10
Illinoise: 9
Florida: 5
Pennsylvania: 5
Georgia, Louisiana, Indiana: 2
One each from Alaska, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and Arizona

I can't wait to see what happens with our defense. Lovett has all winter to figure out what he has and wants to do. Keep an eye on that.

Thanks for all the recruiting news....keep it coming!!!

According to Boca Rocket, Joe Morgan has verballed to Illinois.

BTW, that linebacker sounds like a great pickup (the one from Florida).

Yah...I just read that about Morgan...I like how Stanzi, the QB form NE Ohio, was a ** guy on Rivals when BG, UT and Miami were offering, but now that Iowa, Purdue and possibly Michigan are offering or looking at him, he's *** and the #10 dual threat QB. Elitist bastards!!.

You boys need to concentrate on recruiting some defensive help...how good of a QB do you need get to throw 10 yard screens....many of them over our defense...

From what I've heard, UT is concentrating mostly on defense, but they are still trying to land one QB. I really couldn't care less if they sign a QB this year. I was really hoping that they would sign Nate Davis until I heard that he had academic issues. Now I don't care, but I've heard he has narrowed it down to UT and Ball State (probably because they were the only two willing to risk a scholarship). If UT does get him, I hope to hell he cuts it academically. I saw that same thing about Stanzi on Miami's site. They do that every year. UT got a three star receiver two years ago and he dropped to a one star after signing.

The Rockets have received a verbal from this guy who may play TE. Personally, I hope he adds about thirty pounds or so and plays DE. I also wouldn't mind seeing him on the FG block unit.

BTW, I forgot to mention this before. Though I do think there is always room for improvement, having one of the best defenses in the MAC is good enough for me. The only reason I think we need the help that you speak about is because the Rockets will lose a number of key defensive starters to graduation this year.

We're recruiting the Krauss kid from Patrick Henry, Marcus Hyde from Fostoria, PJ Mahone from Elyria and Joe Morgan from Cleveland.
I think they prefer to get what we need form Ohio, but sometimes you have to look elsewhere....

TR - this kid blocked 3 kicks as a junior in high school. His height and wingspan is great for blocking kicks.
