Just curious, but even though they might not be considered 1-A in "pure" sense of word, what's the primary color of BROWN University?hammb wrote:As mentioned earlier, though, WMU has pretty much abandoned brown in their color scheme. I don't get your use of the word "pure." They aren't I-A. They aren't even close. Good school, but not on the gridiron.Class of 61 wrote: Just curious, but even though they might not be considered 1-A in "pure" sense of word, what's the primary color of BROWN University?
Someone mentioned baseball uniforms that were predominately red with brown trim, and that it seemed odd.
My personal view is that this is how our teams come off when they wear mostly orange with a bit of brown trim. It's ... confusing. It looks a bit odd.
In my mind, it's easier for our colors to make sense when brown is well represented.
I'm sure some will disagree, but that's my view.

I will add this, though, for Class of 61.
Whether Brown University is "pure" I-AA or otherwise, there are only a few schools at any level that have brown in their color scheme.
Off hand, the only other schools that come to mind that haven't been mentioned in this thread are St. Bonaventure, Baldwin-Wallace and the Rochester Institute of Technology.
There aren't many. And we aren't competing against the schools I mentioned (except, arguably, for Bonaventure, which wears yellow or black whenever possible to avoid the brown in their scheme).

Schad, When I said "pure" I was referring to the fact that many people think of Ivy League schools as D-1, when in reality they really aren't... 8)
p.s. -- I DID know that Brown's color scheme was predominately Brown and Red.. just threw it out there for fun. (and didn't want to get to the B-W's of the D-3 world. Ivys are thought of by many as "major" because of their academic reps, when athletically they're D-1AA's.

I do remember when some of the football preview magazines would give as much or more space to the Ivy League than they did the MAC, even through the MAC plays at a higher level.
I don't notice this as much anymore.

In fact, we will open the season there later this year.BGFan wrote:FWIW, we have played RIT in hockey.
Theoretically, RIT's choice of colors can be traced back back to Dr. L.L. Winslow of the Bowling Green State Normal College's Industrial Arts department.
When I lived in Rochester, I sometimes ran into old timers who were Cleveland Browns fans.
That sounds strange; the Bills have been the local team since 1960, and the local NFL team since the late 60s.
But before the Bills opened their doors for business, the Cleveland Browns had won over a lot of fans in Rochester. The only other team competing for fans up there was the New York (football) Giants. The Browns were utterly dominant in that era, and later they had Jim Brown (Syracuse '57). To this day, the Browns still have a radio affiliate in Rochester, I believe.
Anyway, RIT played it's games as the "Techmen" and wore blue and grey until 1955, when the university's SID came up with "Tigers." Two years later, they changed the colors to "burnt umber, orange, and white."
I think it's quite possible that the dominance of the Cleveland Browns in that era -- along with its contingent of local fans -- influenced RIT's choice. And if you believe that our colors influenced Paul Brown's choice of uniforms for his new AAFC team -- well then it's possible RIT has its colors all because Dr. Winslow spotted a certain feathered hat on an interruban between Bowling Green and Toledo in 1914.
For Lord Byron's benefit: A possible flaw in my theory is the fact that East Rochester High School's "Bombers" have long worn brown and orange. How long? Does it predate RIT's choice? Does it predate the Cleveland Browns? If so, then my theory may be all wet.

Yes, and unfortunately I have to be in Ohio that weekend for family business.Schadenfreude wrote:

This was also due to the Great Satan Modell's TV network which had a local outlet in Rochester. So, the Browns were on every week. I can also confirm that there is a radio outlet for Browns games in Rochester.Schadenfreude wrote:

Being that I didn't grow up here, I think this is probably more appropriately directed to JohnnySwoop.Schadenfreude wrote: For Lord Byron's benefit: A possible flaw in my theory is the fact that East Rochester High School's "Bombers" have long worn brown and orange.
