No, wait, I know- they were sailing OVER those wider, longer fields and because global warming (Hillary's fault) has thawed the Arctic Ocean ice, thus bringing its waters closer to the U.S, the balls were landing on ships taking the new Northwest Passage to China and confusing Asians who unload the cargo in Hong Kong. Yeah, that's it.
