Man I feel like a complete idiot for my initial post this afternoon. I didn't have a clue in the world what really happened. What was one player has now become three, and has spread into our starting lineup. Credit card fraud? Willie Geter?! Friggin a. I understand that most college students are poor, but these guys aren't paying for tuition or room and board. To take a credit card from a parking lot and use it like they did was strictly pure greed. What ever happened to being the good samaritan and returning the card, or at least doing away with it so that somebody else couldn't use it?

The fact that these three pulled this s**t right after what happened to Hardwick and Barrow is what amazes me most. Those two go grand theft auto on their neighbors and get kicked off, so these three decide to steal and use a credit card to buy s**t at Meijer? I'm all for the legal system working itself out, but if it turns out they did that, get them outta here. I don't want anybody on my team that doesn't understand the fundamental difference between right and wrong.

As concerns our "florida" guys getting into trouble, the bottom line is that the kids are just dumber in the south. The public schools down there are s**t compared to up north and out west, and its no surprise that the SEC schools (Georgia anyone? Alabama perhaps?) have been struggling more than the rest of the nation when it comes to off-field trouble. Their kids come from sketchier backgrounds. I said back in 2006-07 that our recruiting class that year stunk, and hardly anybody believed me. Why did I think that? Because if there's one cardinal rule in recruiting, it's this. If you're getting beat out for players in your home region/state, you aren't doing a good job. We ended up getting the bottom of the barrel in 2006-07 because we got crushed by other MAC schools recruiting the state of Ohio (minus maybe Sheehan and a few other guys). Now it's showing the stale and rotting fruit of the "florida haul".

I currently teach in the South, and schools here are no better or worst than the ones in Ohio. I have gone to many conferences and conventions and met many fine teachers and administrators from the south who pour their lives into their profession. The real problem stems from the system of HS athletics and the pride that many communities pour into their teams.

Living near Charlotte NC, the only team you hear about is Independence (Chris Leak went there). The town idolizes these athletes, and when they misbehave consquences do not always teach the lesson it should. As a result they begin to think they can get away with anything. The same is true for many places in Ohio as well. Growing up in Avon Lake I know plenty of football players who were given passes when the police caught them drunk. In fact I was in a car where our star running back was driving drunk, and the police just tailed him home and did not arrest him.

I know I am going off on a tangent here, but I hate the stigma my new home receives. There are plenty of bright young men and women down here and a lot of schools that produce top notch scholars and athletes.

I did go off on quite an angle there, and when I referred to the dumb schools of the south, I was more aiming at Florida, Alabama, and the deep south as opposed to North Carolina. But it was wrong of me stereotype the whole region. That being said, you can't dispute that the universities down there have TONS of problems with student athletes, a lot of which can be traced to the reasons you posted.

This continues to sicken me... hours later. I don't know if I'll go to a football game this year.

Seriously....

Disgusted.

I feel the same way, and thinking about it pisses me off that I paid money for season tickets to support this program. I will still be there because I love football and love BG, and more importantly I love spending time with my azz.com friends, but a part of me feels awful that we're supporting this crap. I don't know what they can do, but this sort of s**t has got to end...soon.

I have had my beefs with Brandon over the years, but this off the field stuff is taking it to a new low. I don't want to support it, but at the same time I don't want to punish myself for the crap that these idiots have done. I know one thing, this has pretty much taken away any excitement I felt for the upcoming season.

Oh, and we better hear our HMFIC step up and take some responsibility for this crap too. He's been shunning responsibility for years while basking in his own glory whenever something good happened. Just once it'd be nice to hear him step up and take responsibility when his guys f**k up. Won't happen, I'm sure, but it should.

bsman62 wrote:This offseason for BG has to be the most frustrating one for me since I stepped foot on campus in 1993. Enough is enough already! And if I hear another comment about how this kind of stuff happens at other schools across the country all the time, I’m going to explode. NEWS FLASH! Many of us don’t give a rat’s ass what happens at other schools across the country, and frankly, it’s not our problem. What is our problem is when it does hit home for us. Our school is BG, we care about BG, end of story. I don’t care what happens at Ohio State, I don’t care what happens at Toledo, and I don’t care what happens at LSU for that matter in terms of off-the-field problems. If 15 guys at USC get dismissed, or if 12 guys at Florida are arrested, or if 10 guys at New Mexico State quit, so be it. What I do care about is each and every one of the guys who put on orange and brown and represent an institution we all call our own and have grown to love. For every 15-20 guys at BG who do the right thing, it only takes one to give the institution a black eye. And Lord knows, this summer, we’ve had more than enough of our share of them. Between the arrests, suspensions, dismissals, defections, transfer and injuries, we have been through our share of crap, and it’s flat out embarrassing already. And here’s the kicker, we haven’t played a single down yet. Where is the character of this team? Where is the intelligent decision making?

For those players who have walked a straight line and aren’t part of these problems, I commend you and I’m sorry you’ve had these kind of disruptions for what is supposed to be a run at a championship season to get ready for. But for the guys who can’t seem to figure it out, get a F’in clue already! You are preseason MAC East favorites, start acting like it!!! You are a D-I football player. You are playing a sport at a level hundreds of thousands of guys every year wish they could but can’t. You are likely on a full ride with the chance to get a first-class education for playing a sport many of you love to begin with. Some of you will even be lucky enough to use this opportunity to springboard into a professional career in the sport. Why in the hell would you risk throwing all of it away for some weed, gas or an X-Box?! Let me save some of you the trouble in deciphering whether or not you’re going to get caught if you decide to drift in you’re decision making in the near future. Word to the wise- if you are going to do something to jeopardize your education and playing career here, or anywhere else for that matter - you’re going to get caught. Maybe not immediately, maybe not right away, but you will, leading to a likely arrest, dismissal, suspension, etc. Tell me, how hard is it to do the right thing anymore? When you want something someone else has (like, some weed for example), you don’t break into their home and try and take it. When you see something of someone else’s sitting there on the ground (like a credit card off the top of my head), you don’t pick it up and use it. And if you just can’t make yourself walk past it and you’re so inclined that you must pick it up, then do so, but try turning it in! These are thing a child in kindergarten can understand for crying out loud, you are in college, there’s no excuse. I can’t believe for one second that any of these guys didn’t know they were in the wrong. Guys, it’s plain and simple, what’s yours is yours and what isn’t, isn’t. How difficult is this to understand? If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. So the next time you’re out walking around and stumble across…oh let’s see…some weed that isn’t yours, or a credit card that isn’t yours, just leave it alone.

Yup, sure takes away any excitement I had about going to Pittsburgh.

Certainly don't want to hijack this thread with something positive, but did I miss an announcement about that someone who didn't show up at Ball State, but he will be playing for BG?

I feel a bit the same way and it goes toward what Grant was saying earlier... there are a lot of people that support these athletes, through donations of money, time, fan support, whatever... and to get repaid by a few who can't put their head on straight is disappointing.

As someone else said, I hope Chris Bullock is ready to play and that AT can step up and play the game of his life at WR/QB/RB (and maybe a little nose guard, too).

I'd be shocked to not see longer suspensions come down in the future, maybe the near future and since my plans are made and tickets paid for, I'll be there for the 80 or so men who want to be there and represent the brown and orange.

Though it wasn't nearly as serious (some partying out of control, I believe?) but it reminds me of the dozen or so kids that got suspended the week of the Navy game in '93. A game we SHOULD have won and didn't because of a few boneheads. But the guys that made the trip played their AZZes off and almost came away with a win regardless.

I am disgusted as well. I am trying not to forget there are 90 other guys on this team who have done their part to represent BG football with pride and respect. I feel as if we it to them to continue to support and root for this team. I realize this program is having it's problems, but what kind of fans would we be if we stopped supporting our team when they need us the most.

I'm like Grant, I'm really irked still by all of this. It really takes the excitement out of going to Pittsburgh this weekend for me. As a student in my last year here, it makes me sad that students who are given a lot (free ride, free room and board, etc.) lack the mental capacity to make easy decisions about what's right and what's wrong.

As a D-1 athlete, you become part of the face and fabric of the university. You represent us on national television, you bring revenue for the school in terms of attendance at sporting events, but most importantly you should be an example to the other students on campus of how to conduct yourself in a mature and responsible manner.

As someone who has been contemplating buying season tickets to BG football after I graduate this year, this is definitely making me reconsider. I love my school and I have a ton of pride in being a Falcon, but I cannot fully support a program that allows this much foolish behavior happen in a span of 2 1/2 months.

Shame on those players who have been involved, shame on the coaching staff and even shame on the AD for letting this happen. As a result, your public appeal will undoubtedly be skewed until time passes this over.

I'm conflicted about supporting this program. I want to say that I will support the remaining kids who are decent chaps and just want to do what's right.

Being in the insurance industry, however, I have to wonder how the actions of a growing few is indicative of the population. Meaning, we are having more and more kids suspended from the team by the week (or so it seems.) Do we have decent kids on the team or just a bunch of guys who haven't been caught yet?

It seems as though the A.D. and H.C. has to perform some SERIOUS damage control at this point. Failure to do so will have me leaning towards my belief that we have a bunch of our football players who just haven't been busted yet.

Welcome to the new "Pen State." Good thing we have orange in our colors because we won't have to get custom jump suits.

I'm going to go vomit some more.
