No one would get suspended from USG from this kind of minor misdemeanor, or from the student newspaper, or any other extracurricular activity I can think of.Crew Love wrote:I agree that these young men need encouragement. However, dismissing what happened or treating the situation with kiddie gloves is not the answer; tough love is. The only way to genuinely support Anthony and Ryan is to help teach them and show them their wrongs. Bowling Green State University is an academic institution where learning extends outside of the classroom and into life lessons. Treating student-athletes like they are above the law is not encouragement, it's an injustice. If the coaching staff and law enforcement/judicial officials take this unfortunate event seriously and react sternly, it may not be good for next year's football team, but will be good for Anthony Turner and Ryan Patrick's futures.
I'm having trouble seeing why so many people are so convinced a game suspension is required here.

Mrs. Turner?Turner/Patrick
First off I’m not taking anything away from the situation. You are all right that this situation is F***ed up. I agree they both made the biggest mistakes of their life. And you don’t think they don’t know that already? I was simply saying to people that don’t understand what they read to get your s**t straight before you go off and say stupid things about how they should be punished. They got caught doing an illegal thing and I believe they should be punished. But you got to understand they are kids. They are human, you all act like you are perfect. No one if perfect and they made a mistake. So why waste your time arguing their punishment when it has already been made. Why waste your time going off of he say she say s**t when you don’t know the whole situation or what really happened. No matter how disappointed you guys are in Turner he is still going to get his chance at QB. Nothing can take that away and he is an amazing player and I hope that he comes out this year with stats that are off the chart to shut all you up.
p.s FLIPPER that is just disrespectful and shows how ignorant you really are.

Here is my perspective. At what point (criminal level) does a drug conviction affect a students ability to get Fianicial Aid. I can't remember if it says felony or just drug conviction on the form. But if a conviction of this type of charge would lead to Fiancial aid disqualification than there needs to be a stiff punishement. I think that is the level in which extra punishements need to come into to play with college athletes. If any old student at the U wouldn't recieve extra penalities for the crime then an athlete shouldn't be punished too harshly.

Actually, USG has an Internal Affairs Committee. My guess is, they would put the individual up for censure or removal (if found guilty).Schadenfreude wrote:No one would get suspended from USG from this kind of minor misdemeanor,....
ARTICLE VIII. CENSURE OR REMOVAL FROM OFFICE
Section 1. Any Senator or Officer may be given censure by a three-fourths (3/4)-majority vote within the Senate. Censure shall serve as a resolution of disapproval by the Senate where such action does not merit removal from office.
Section 2. When an action is judged to merit removal from office any Senator or Officer may be removed from office by a three-fourths (3/4)-majority vote within the Senate.
Section 3. Any ruling may be appealed through a vote of the student body.

MOST USG/Newspaper/other extra-curricular students aren't recipients of scholarship money from alumni. Most aren't as visible in the community as the projected starting QB of the football team. Most aren't talked about on game-day on national TV. Double standard? Probably. Higher standard? Absolutely.Schadenfreude wrote: No one would get suspended from USG from this kind of minor misdemeanor, or from the student newspaper, or any other extracurricular activity I can think of.

I'll bet you can find the names of plenty of USG senators -- past and present -- in the Bowling Green Municipal Court index, which is online. My money says this procedure has not been used for a weed possession charge.transfer2BGSU wrote:Actually, USG has an Internal Affairs Committee. Because I'm pissed off. I really really hate being embarassed of my Alma Mater, and that's what I will be if we don't levy a game suspension.

pdt1081...that sounds like the perfect plan. I agree wholeheartedly with it.pdt1081 wrote:I don't usually venture into the football boards, but here's my suggestion for punishment:If they fail to complete any of these requirements they are removed from the team and must repay all scholarship money received. Hit them where it's going to hurt the most ($$$). They have money to spend on drugs, they have money to repay the school.
- 1. Not allowed to practice with the team during the spring. Not saying they don't practice, they practice together but not with the rest of the team. Running laps/steps seems like a fair practice. Gotta work on that conditioning that smoking takes away.
2. Suspended for the first game next season. They messed up, they don't play the next game.
3. Random drug testing throughout the season and offseason for as long as they attend BGSU. They fail one, they are gone forever. No ifs ands or buts about it. If they don't have a legal prescription it had better not be in their system.
4. Must give presentations at local schools (elementary, jr high, high school) about the consequences of drugs. This will be in addition to any community service they receive from the University and courts. They can speak from experience about how using drugs almost ruined their life.
5. Graduate on time.
On edit: This is a model for punishment of any athlete with a drug related offense. This does not just apply to the two players this thread is about. Some modifications would need to be made to 1 and 2 based on the sport/timing of incident ("next" season, "spring" practice). You get the idea.
Right now, I'm just in shock. I'm greatly saddened that someone I had been looking forward to playing for the Falcons and being a great role model for BG students and fans would make such a poor judgment call. I need to tell my dad, who is a Falcon fan, but I dread it. I know he'll be very disappointed him just like the rest of us.
I know we're not all perfect, but most of us have enough sense and respect for ourselves to not do that. Granted he does have more pressure since he's one of the most talked about people on campus, but he should still realize that is a representative of not only the football team, but Bowling Green State University as a whole. Every student here does that...and we don't always make the right calls and it reflects back on the university and that person. My only hope now is that he learns from this and that he and the team are able to put this behind them and focus on being an upstanding team that we can be proud of.
GO FALCONS!!

Re: Turner/Patrick
As a former President of USG, I can tell you that they would be removed from the organization if they were busted for this type of behavior. The office of campus involvement and most orgnanizations require their membership to be in "good standing" with the university. These events would not put you in good standing, to say the least. Yes, it is a bigger story because the young men are football players, but most students would be removed from there leadership positions on campus. But that doesn't mean they could not be a member of the group.Schadenfreude wrote:I'll bet you can find the names of plenty of USG senators -- past and present -- in the Bowling Green Municipal Court index, which is online. No, I don't know that! How many times does this same type of thing have to happen around them for they finally get it? You mean to tell me that it takes them personally getting caught before it hits them?I agree they both made the biggest mistakes of their life. And you don’t think they don’t know that already?
I think the real reason it happens is that they have to real fear of punishment if they get caught. Maybe a short suspension, a little negative publicity, run a few stairs? But it eveuntually works out, man! Then some bleeding heart is going to take up their cause and spew the old, "it's not the end of the world, just reflective of the student body, these are just 18 and 19 year old kids." Bullshit! Grow up and start taking responsibility for your actions. They deserve everything that's coming to them...including get their asses reamed on a fan chat board like this?
