Some of you Buckeyes are really warped....
Welcome to the modern age.

I make no bones about it. I don't have any misconception of "the student athlete" I'll be honest, I don't really root for high scores in Math 452. I don't care if Andy Katzenoyer is taking AIDS Awareness, I just want him to tackle some people. If Ted Ginn is a marginal student in Geography, I don't care, so long as he scores some damn points.

I'm sorry their is nothing 'romantic' about college football anymore. But, I'm not going to hide the ball. And, like with the "kill your television folks" let me say this, If it were not for the popularity of Football - at Ohio State it literally pays for EVERY OTHER sport at OSU (which, aside from Basketball, ALL lose money) - there wouldn't be such a thing as "athletic competition" at the collegiate level.

Anyway, if you ask me, what's "warped" is people who still buy in to this BS ideal of the "student athlete" Particularly if that person works for the NCAA compliance office.

That's nice...you and the band of thugs you represent (otherwise known as the BCS) destroy college athletics and then call the rest of naive for criticizing it.

You further justify it by discussing how many other sports you fund with your professional football team. How many teams do you think you'd support if it weren't for title IX? How many other sports do you think you'd support if you and the rest of the "football powers" got their wish and told the NCAA and your university's to f*ck off and organized your own leagues.

My guess would be zero

Dude, you seem to have some issues with 1) anger and 2) reality. I don't think I said anywhere that I like or don't like "the way it is" only that it is the way it is. Honestly, do you seriously sit around rooting for high scores in Philosophy 101? I'm saying the romantic notion of the student athlete is dead.

I'm not "justifying" anything so much as pointing out the fact that - like one's television - there is some good to the beast that it has become. Sorry you don't like that. As title IX goes, I don't care to speculate about what would be if things weren't as they are. It's too easy to make up any answer and have it sound "true"

Anyway, flipper, as I said, you sound like a very angry guy and I think it's best if I just let you spout off from here on out since I don't wanna intrude on your board.

Angry? Me? I'm a real sweetheart....just ask around. It's not my fault you don't have the intellect to defend your own positions. By all means, take it back to buckeyeplanet where your amoral vision of college athletics is the norm.

I'll chime in to say that Flipper is the most un-angry person I've ever met.

He's usually a jovial guy.

You are very naive then. Most people playing football, even at OSU, aren't going to make any money at it after college. Funny, but MOST players, even at the D1 level know this & plan for the future. Therefore, they try to graduate, and have a degree to fall back on that.

How do I know this? Oh yeah, my husband and all his friends played D1 football, and believe it or not, graduated, got degrees, and work in the business world.

What do you people smoke down there?

Yeah, and based on recent events, it seems that the only person Flipper would ever hurt is himself. :P

Umm... actually, your remarks support my contention. I agree most DI athletes - regardless of sport - do not play professional ball. That being so, the fact that so many scholarships are offered to athletes is one of the best things that can happen to a kid who might not otherwise go to school.

Don't misunderstand me, I want these kids to get an education and "better themselves" as it were. But, once again, I don't care if Troy Smith does well in History 514. I really dont. He should.. but I dont.

And this just shows your ignorance. Yes, he should care, but so should you, because if doesn't do well in history, math, biology, etc., he doesn't have the chance to play.

Your comments are further proof of my theory that 80% of OSU fans think of Buckeye football as a professional franchise. And that, no matter what you say my friend, is bad for collegiate athletics.

I don't think it's professional... quite the contrary. I just don't get all glassy eyed at this outdated heroic concept of the Student Athlete. Furthermore, I'm more than willing to allow a kid to make his own decisions about his own life... if Troy Smith doesn't make the grade, that's his problem, not mine. Sorry if that sounds callous, but I still haven't heard any one of you people say that you sit around rooting for high test scores.

Anyway, the point is this, some of you seem to "poo poo" the fact that Ohio State is a "football factory" investing huge amounts of money in to athletics, football in particular. And, you're so blinded by the fact that Ohio State also reaps a reward for the investment, that you fail to see the good that comes out of it.

What's his name said something about it all being about money... well, yes.. it is... that's how the world works. Now, if you'd like to have a philosophical discussion about if it SHOULD work that way, I'd agree that it shouldn't. But, the reality is, money is how these schools operate.. And some schools took the risk on College football.. some other schools took the risk on HIGH acedemics (ie Harvard) You fault one, and champion the other, and it's absurd. Because Ohio State - owing to the success and popularity of the football program - offers more opportunity to HS kids who might not otherwise go to school... I don't know .... it seems to me you're looking for a reason to hate OSU, and this particular one doesn't work.

I graduated from OSU in 1995. I'm proud of my degree and my school. But, at the end of the day, when it comes to football, I just want to see some touchdowns. When my son goes to school, whether it's at OSU or any place else, I'll care about the "Student Athlete" But, I've got far too many other things to worry about than if Antonio Pittman is getting it done in Psychology 122,.

I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that sweeping conclusions about my ignorance undercut the contention that "all views" are welcome.
