But wasn't the BG/Toledo game on the friday after thanksgiving in 2003? I for some reason remember coming back up here during thanksgiving break for marching band. that is a long time ago and stuff and the team was better, but I remember people in the stands.
I could be wrong, my memory seems to slip!
Yeah it was on friday in 2001 too. Big difference in that those games were later in the day and we were were a whole lot better.

Check that. The '03 game was a noon kick on a Saturday, moved from 6pm Friday.

Personally the one part of the schedule I DO like is the UT game. I don't have to work that day and I have always liked having that game on that day.

However, I understand that I'm in the minority, and it is especially crappy planning for the students.

Selfishly, I am in this boat, three.

EDIT: Especially, after further review, the two Friday night games might be the only one's I can make this year. :(

Well....I just don't know what to say. I will still be buying 4 season tickets like I do every year because I can't turn away from the players. It's all about the kids with me. I'm po'ed that Boise isn't coming this fall as well as NIU. I don't mind the UT game on a Friday cuz I'll be off that day but I can see how it creates havoc for a lot of folks.

Sure does seem like the MAC doesn't give a crap about BG right now...and that is a big mistake on the part of the conference.

WKU is Division 1-A this year, correct? When I look at the rest of the schedule, only Boston College gives me the creeps. Minny and MSU are not that great. I am looking forward to the trip to East Lansing...that should be a great time. Temple at home for the Sebo Dedication is not the best choice. We won't be at Minny or BC but every other game should be a go. And 9 out of 12 games are on Saturday, when they should be...and the other 3 on Friday. None of this Tue or Wed horsecrap.

I guess I'm looking for the positives instead of the obvious negatives. Everyone has a right to be ticked off because we were told we had home games with BSU and NIU...then Navy. Now this. :x

Well, I'm looking forward to the spring game. Maybe the MAC told BG that counted as a home game.

Sucks being out of town for work and just catching up on this.

Like someone else said, I'm too disappointed to be angry. I called it a couple weeks back when the Sentinel mentioned the "pool" of teams our OOC games would come from. I knew we would get WKU instead of Boise. That is just sad.

Think about this. Just a few weeks/months ago, we were thinking we would have Navy and Boise at the Doyt this year. Now we have Temple and WKU. I can't look at this any other was then to say we are the MAC's bitch.

Personally, I do like the UT game on Friday afternoon instead of a Tuesday night. Despite the fact students are off, we have played on Friday before and drew quite well. Of course, we had better teams in '01 and '03, so that had a lot to do with the attendence numbers.

What exposure do we gain by playing on Fridays for ESPNU? There are about 20 households that actual get that channel.

How about the fact we have only two home games in the first 8 weeks of the season? Simply unacceptable.

Another stretch where we play three straight road games. That stretch is what doomed are season last year. Wouldn't Brandon speak up and say 'don't ever let this happen again'?

"we have positioned ourselves well for the future" My interpretation - we expect to get big buyouts from Minne, Boise, whoever, because they will never ever play a game in the Doyt.

I'm the 21st person to have ESPN-U. I guess it's a good thing I got the Insight Communications sports package yesterday since none of the games will be on ESPN or ESPN2

Also, I see we play at Boise State next season, why can't Christopher grow a pair and say you guys are coming here next season and then we'll see about 2011. As I see it now they're going to have two free home games and screw us in 2011.

I have ESPN U as well on the Dish Network so that makes 22!!

I agree, Tricky. I don't think Boise State will ever play at BG. For us to go there again in 2008 makes no sense. Why not schedule a road game with another Big Ten school next year and make a decent payout...with much less travel.

It is a weak schedule, Temple is killing us and the MAC, and it is unfair to dump all of this on AD Greg since he is both new and much of this wasn't his doing. We have zero media appeal right now, owing to last season. So we have no leverage among the networks.

I think we could see a massive dive in attendance next year. The UT game is bad because a lot of families are going to travel, and they aren't going to drive to BGSU on the most massive shopping day of the year, after a major holiday, especially if there is any remote reason not to do so. The Students won't leave town Wednesday, to come back Friday, to go back home, to come back to school on Sunday. It just won't happen.

WKU might be 1A, I don't know, and there it is. How many passive fans are going to know who they are, what division they are, or care about the game. Homecoming at BGSU doesn't draw dick, never has. A slight bump maybe, but nothing like you see a bigger schools. Frankly I think homecoming weekend sucks at BGSU and always has. But that is a gripe for another thread.

Temple? They suck, and worse, we can lose to them. The Sebo Center won't draw any fans, just boosters. Temple won't draw anybody, they aren't even a major program by way of conference affiliation anymore.

Plus mix into things, the almost given truth that we won't beat MSU or Minn. And if we get thumped badly enough, nobody will want to come to see what will seem like another lousy team. Lose to Temple, and you can fold the tents, we won't see five figures in the stands until Toledo.

The days of bending over for TV are over. The conference doesn't get enough bounce out of it for it to matter anymore. We are getting shifted to the fourth string networks now anyway. And the fans are getting screwed at every single turn. Its not worth it. We needed the TV in the past, pre-web. I don't think that is so much the case now.

In any case, 5 home games, when anybody in the MAC pulls 7? Pure bullshi*.

We were getting the shaft with being bounced between divisions, we were getting the shaft with the UT game, we were getting the shaft when they snuffed out the NIU rivalry in the making, we got the shaft in the schedule several years in a row. Somebody needs to grow a pair and do something. Sadly it won't be this year, and with basketball and hockey sucking so hard, most BGSU fans only have the train-wreck novelty of a coaching search to talk about.

I have a very strong feeling that when the FMB plays, it's just gonna echo around the entire stadium because there won't be anyone there!! Everyone will still be on vacation, and it sucks for both the football players and the band members because we'll have to come back to campus for that one day. It's rediculous!!
The 2001 and 2003 Toledo games were during student breaks. We had about 26,000 and 30,000-plus for them.

I'm just amazed at how people are whaling on our new AD without even bothering to consider what the full situation might be.

If scheduling was easy, we'd be hosting Michigan this year.

Perhaps someone should write J.D. or our A.D. so we can actually get a clear explanation for what happened.

You mean we aren't?

The UT game could draw well, but if this team doesn't do great, not just OK, but GREAT, I don't see 20,000 being possible.

And again, I agree, it isn't fair to dump all the blame on our AD. We aren't high on the totem pole right now, least of all a newbie with new street cred.

AD Greg needs to hold up a 7-11 or something, get the respect of the brothers in Cleveland.

I don't understand the pessimism.

We drew 26,000 -- I think that was the number -- on a Friday night in 2001. We drew 30,000-plus for what I believe was a noon kick on a Saturday in 2003. In both cases, students were not in town.

So ... what's the problem? Is it the 2:30 p.m. kick?

Is this a problem?

Do people really work the day after Thanksgiving?

It's a shame students aren't in town this particular weekend, but if Bowling Green is going to host a game on a weekday, the only day better than this one is the Thursday before Labor Day weekend.

Yes, and it was actually a sellout. Granted, the fact that we were nationally ranked may have had something to do with it, but that does not change the fact that the game took place the day after thanksgiving and the fact that it was about -20 out (at least it certainly felt that way). I'm pretty sure I regained normal feeling in my toes about a year ago. But it was a HELL of a game! :D

Boise isn't the culprit here...we ...or more accurately The MAC is/are. We had two separate home and home agreements with those Spuds. We traded our first home game off to get Boise to agree to a game with Utah. The MAC had to get Utah off of OU's schedule to fit us on. So we gave up our first of two with Boise at home to satisfy the MAC and OU's needs.

That deal last year wasn't just to postpone the 2006 game...it wiped it off the books entriely. The secoind game was then moved up to 2007 so we could play them before going back there in 2008. That game was traded off because we had to fill dates with MSU and Booston College and shoehorn MFT (MFT is what I now call motherf**king Temple) into our slate to again satisfy the MAC's needs. We are partly to blame for some of the conference's issues I guess....we had a deal with Pitt that we begged out of to get a series started with Minnesota. I think EMU is taking that game for us.

We basically gave away our two home games with Boise State. I know they're saying they'll be here in 2011, but I think that is just window dressing to make our 2008 trip out there seem more palatable. We might as well say that Santa Claus will play here in 2011 too.
