Trust me, you don't want Fickell. Durkin would be a MUCH better choice, if you're going out of the program. I'm guessing Clawson may want to take most of his staff with him. THAT may be a problem, depending on when he leaves.Falcon137 wrote:Of course I say Fickell and and football scoop tweets DJ Durkin is the favorite. Me likey.

I like D J Durkin. That would be a nice pick.

Re: Wake forest
Now that it's official ...
Some folks who I consider my top candidates:
Mike Elko (first pick by a couple miles)
Pat Narduzzi (may be dreaming but you never know)
DJ Durkin. Been outstanding everywhere.
Stud. If nothing else, his attitude on the sideline is awesome. He sure knew how to motivate the O linemen in his days here.
Zach Azzanni. Been outstanding everywhere too.
Mark Carney. Perhaps a little young but you never know. The work he has done with our WR for all these years is commendable. If you ask me, this year was his best year by far seeing the progress of those guys.
Rob Ambrose. If UConn doesn't make a move. Outstanding coach there.
Not interested in ...
Luke Fickell. Lost control of his team down the stretch.
Jim Tressell. No, Globe
Any retread head coach. We've already seen how that went in basketball.

Re: Wake forest
BG is going to have to significantly up its salary if it wants to draw in a top assistant coach. Coaching salaries at the major powers have gone up a lot since Clawson came to BG, so replacing him with someone from one of those schools will mean a big raise in salary for whoever they hire as a replacement.
I would hate to see BG "cheap out" because of this, especially given how much talent is in the bullpen waiting for the right coach to come aboard. With the right hire, there's no reason BG can't repeat at champions.

Re: Wake forest
Thanks for the salary info. Fickell makes much more than that currently. $2m+ per year is a ton of money and no one can blame him for taking it.

Re: Wake forest
Call me crazy but we have to go with Coach Elko.
I don't see these 'big' school coordinators taking a significant pay-cut to coach BG.
Elko would be a great hire and wouldn't command a huge salary.

Re: Wake forest
I'd love for BG to pay a salary that would make clawson at least consider staying, but where is that money going to come from? Low ticket sales, smallish fan base, and no phil knight's to bankroll the operation. That's our reality and one of those big school coordinators would need to value the experience more than the pay.

Re: Wake forest
Unrealistic. But maybe we can build a relationship with him and we can play a one and one with Wake or Clawson can refer us a recruit that doesn't fit in his numbers or Clawson can come back and be honored.jakehovs23 wrote:Is it wrong of me to wish a coach would choose the community and family aspect over the money? Re: Wake forest
That would be cool. He's left this program in the best shape it's been in since the early 2000s, maybe even before seeing as he won us a championship. Just hope he remembers his roots!Globetrotter wrote:Unrealistic. Re: Wake forest
I kind of hate the idea of promoting from within in these scenarios but Elko does make Sense. I think the short list would be
Durkin
Azzani
Elko
Strudrawa
Fickell
Durkin
Azzani
Elko
Strudrawa
Fickell
Re: Wake forest
Fickell doesn't make that much. I believe he's in the $700,000 range -- still way overpaid for what he does, in my view.BGGrad01 wrote:Thanks for the salary info. Fickell makes much more than that currently. $2m+ per year is a ton of money and no one can blame him for taking it.
The SEC is where the escalation of assistant salaries really took off, and top coaches are now paying their top people in-line with those salaries (typically upwards of $500,000 per year for coordinators).
So unless BG can convince someone to take the job for about $450,000 or so, they're going to have to find a way to come up with some extra money.
Re: Wake forest
I'm all for coach Elko taking the reins for the bowl game and having an opportunity to interview. I don't know names but I like an interview mix of young/hungry urban Meyer types and a few successful coordinators/recruiters.

Sorry. Mixed in a comment about $2m+ related to clawson. Yes, fickell is around $700k.
