I'm all for going for it in that situation, but what I don't understand is why the coaches decide to call a play in shotgun? You're effectively making it a 4th and 6 or 7 by default and really lowering the percentages of getting a first down if it's going to be a run.hammb wrote:Didn't see the game and haven't rewatched it, but kicking a FG when you're inside the 10 yard line is one of my "NEVER DO THIS" moments that goes against standard football strategy. I'd rather go for it 99% of the time and if you get stopped the opponent is still backed all the way down and has to go 90+ yards.Flipper wrote:Agree..going for it on 4th down at the 6 was almost criminally stupid
That said, it's possible that taking the lead in the 4th quarter might fall into the 1% that I would wanna take the FG.
How late in the game was it?

End of the 3rd..start of the 4th qtr...going for it makes sense in the context of our offensive philosophy...there's more internal logic to going for it than kicking a FG. I just HATE to see team risk a chance at taking a lead on the road in the 4th qtr
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

I didn't have much of a problem with any of Babers' decisions to go for it on fourth down.
Re: Game Thread: Purdon't
I was fine with it because he does it every time, the math doesn't lie. If you're going to do it, commit to it. It seems Babers did, in the non conference. I will be interested to see if he continues it in MAC play. He said he needed to make up points when playing P5 opponents and needing to take risks. I hope he continues it against teams with lesser talent in the MAC.

My theory on Tates fg troubles:
Last year and the year before he didn't have to handle the kickoff duty. Kickoffs are more of a driving style of kick meant for distance as opposed to fg kicking whice is moreso an accuracy thing with a high "chip" style trajectory on the ball. I wonder how much of his kicking issue is due to how he is having to change the style with which he is striking the ball. Kicking is absolutely a mental thing and having to change his approach to his kicks could be playing mental games with him.
Just a theory

The theory may have some validity, although 90% of kickers handle both the place kicking and the kickoffs, so he just needs to learn to make the adjustment, like the rest of them do. He's doing a great job on booting most of his kickoffs thru the end zone. I hope he can make the adjustment better than I can when I transition between my driver and a short iron..........I never seem to hit either one of them correctly!vwfalcon wrote:My theory on Tates fg troubles:

The math supports going for it and I fully support going for it as well. But the key is that you don't start distrusting the math on the instances where it doesn't work. Commit to the math, and roll with it.
It's the style of football I want my teams to play, and the style I prefer to watch. Nice to see it here, personally.
Given this was at the beginning of the 4th quarter, I fully support going for it. If it were late in the 4th and we had a chance to take a lead I'd be more inclined to kick, but as a general rule of thumb I love going for it there. Kicking FGs on 4th and short inside the 10 yard line is a loser's game.
