As for the kids from Hardin Northern, it is VERY tough for most D-6 kids to go to D-1 college programs, parthly because of the competition and partially because of the size of the school. I grew up in the BVC, I I can only remebmber a handful of kids that have ever palyed D-1 football. Not sayng it can't be done, but it just doesn't happen very often.
Andy Grubb be one of those kids that played in the BVC and did ok. (I'm grew up in Leipsic  ) Oh, and Leipsic had a QB, Nick Kreinbrink, that went to Northwestern. He started a few games but didn't do much.

I understand

Post by duckunder53 »

I understand that it is tough for a small school athlete to get offers from big time schools, but don't the physical attributes all add up? Look at Grubb (starting OL for the Falcons this past year) from Pandora-Gilboa, he started this year and did a fine job. P-G is a DVI school as well. Leininger was from DV Liberty Center (small school). Also, two players that are at Wake Forest are NW Ohio small school players (Mauk and the LC's coach's son *forget his name*). I'm just saying there is talent there, regardless if they happened to grow up in a small school district. A QB from Otsego got a full ride to Michigan State a few years back, and would have done a nice job had he not messed it up. There are kids in the area, and IMO, BG needs to find a way to keep them home. I'm sure they offered both Waugh and Goatley, but they didn't get them. Fostoria and Findlay have both produced big time players, none attended BG. There are still a few kids out there that might accept the role of "preferred-walk on" if it were offered. Maag from Grove, Schumaker from Delphos St. John's, Kmic from Delta, Keys from Bellevue, Micheli from Upper Sandusky...all All-State players that could play a number of positions at BG, and the most important thing...they're local which in turn COULD bring the fans to the seats.

As a general rule the football played right around here in HS is not on the level that D1A colleges are looking for. The Toledo leagues don't generate nearly the talent that an area of that population should. I don't know why, but it doesn't appear that NW Ohio is really bursting at the seams with talent. Fred Davis last year was the real exception to that rule, but overall there just isn't that much talent in this area, no clue why.

How often do OSU & UM come to this part of the state to recruit players? Not very often when compared to how often they hit other parts of Ohio. It just doesn't seem like Division 1 athletes are growing up here too often. I cannot explain why.

The fact is, the ones that are here aren't staying here. How about the return man at Miami of Ohio, he's from Toledo Central Catholic. The WR to Miami of Ohio from Rossford was pretty darn good. Ohio State got a RB from Toledo Whitmer a few years back, although he couldn't keep himself on the team for one reason or another. Michigan has a DB from a Toledo City League school right now that is pretty good (Barringer). How about Woodson (not like that was possible to get him)? How about Damon Moore from Fostoria going to OSU. There's a list of good players, but you're right. Because NWOhio is full of corn fields and small schools, the athletes generally get over looked. I have played with/against and coached/coached against some athletes that could play DI that never was offered that opportunity. Reason being, they live where the population isn't ungodly high.

Let me say this though. I may be overlooking some of the kids that do stay. But it seems as if there are more kids that go than stay. I know there is a DB on the team from Toledo Whitmer. Chad Long (Safety from a few years back) was from Clyde. There is an OL from the TCL. Also, the RB from Whitmer that went to OSU was B.J. Barre. There is a WR from Clyde this year going to Cincinnati as well. Cincinnati is sure recognizing the talent in NW Ohio. They have three recruits from here this year alone (Goatley, Martin, and Waugh).

Add Diontre Earl to the list of Toledo area players that we didn't go after. He was a smallish LB but he could move well laterally and he hits like a truck.

Great to hear that Corey is doing so well in the classroom.
The roster listed Corey at DB this past season, is he going to be playing WR as implicated in your signature in the near future?
Thanks for elaborating on Brady coming to BG.
If you can remember back to last summers camp, they wanted to have Corey play both ways. Then we had a JC transfer, Simonton come in to play DB. Coach Brandon then stated that Corey would concentrate 100% on WR. He is slated to play WR this coming year. But of course if that doesn't work out, who knows he may wind up playing DB again, if needed.

Nate Fry - Findlay
Derek Kidwell - Fostoria (Mr. Football in OH)
Greg Studrawa - Fostoria, you may have heard of him.

All attend(ed) BG.

It burns me up (and scares me), every time that kid returns a punt. We let a good one get away there.

It's worth mentioning that Charles Woodson went to Fremont.

Toledo does have it's fair share of talent. Some HS players out the Toledo area that have gone to D-1 Schools over the past few years that I can think of:

Josh Lenix (Waite, UT)
Romulus Durant (Waite, UT)
Jeremy Beutler (St. Francis, Ohio U.)
Chad McCarthey (CCHS, BGSU)
JoJuan Armour ( CCHS, Miami of Ohio)
Shaun Mason (St. Johns, Michigan State)
DeMario Suggs (St. Johns, Michigan State)
Justin Fisher ( Bowsher, E. Michigan)
Joe Iorio (SF, Penn State)
Emil Price (SF, UT)
Kent Liddel-Smith (Start, C. Michigan)
Diontre Earl (Rogers, Akron)
Mel Long Jr. (Scott, UT)
Bryan Robinson (Woodward, Fresno State)
Khary Campbell (Sylvania Southview, BGSU)

Not a bad list. Most of these players graduated from HS in the late 90s and some are in the NFL now. Too bad we couldn't recruit more of these players to BG back then.

I agree Schadenfreude, we did lose a good one there. Ryne was planning on heading down 75 to BG to play for the Falcons but that all changed once Urban left. He ended up at Miami partly because JoJaun Armour (All-MAC and former CCHS grad) did well in Oxford. I also think those two were cousins. Still, Ryne is a great player and gives the MAC some well deserved air time whenever he returns one for a TD.

I see Corey Olaynion is not on the list. Probably a good thing. I saw him play many times, and I would say he would make a good player at a D2 school such as Ashland or Findlay. I dont think he would play at BG.

The Maag kid from Columbus Grove is headed to Ashland (Div 2) as reported in yesterday's Lima News.

I am amazed that Maag, Keys and Shumaker have not signed or have chosen the D-2 route.

It looks like we ended up nailing all 26 and then a few others along the way! It sure was a lot of fun!
