man, why did we have to hire him? why couldn't we get a better special teams coach?
Seriously, a nice, long-awaited move, and good to see a former Falcon fill the spot. Congrats, DJ!

nice to see Brandon being proactive - some coaches would have been too stubborn to change

Not to be a wet blanket, but he'll be doing special teams in addition to the job he did last year.
It's an improvement in that fewer people are going to be responsible, but he's not just the special teams coach.

True, but then you can extend that to say our DC is also the position coach for the secondary. Is that a bad thing?

Its the way we do things. The staff isn't that big. He's only coaching Dends, and there's only two of those on any play.
I think that between the recruiting and this, that Coach Brandon recognizes that we aren't going to survive unless we do things better, and he's willing to change things to do that. I think its a good sign.

I've been impressed with Briggs' develpoment as a rush end. If Durkin was responsible for that, and I assume he was at least in part, then give him a shot to run ST. It's not like he could do worse than last year. I suspect Rojas and Ellis, along with all the defensive speed we've recruited, will make DJ look very good in the next couple years.

1) I am excited for DJ. He seems like he could be a great coach down the road and STs coach is the next step to being a coordinator.
2)This doesnt change much. We named a new sts coach, he aint bobby april. This is a guy who has never coached special teams, how good is anyone at anything they have never done before?

Urban Meyer seemed to be a pretty good head coach his 1st year, even though he had never done it before....

If somebody is talented they can be instantly good at something. I have a buddy who shot a 46 the first time he ever stepped foot onto a golf course. As somebody mentioned, Urban was a pretty damn good HC on his first attempt at it.
Certainly you can learn as you go, but it's quite possible that DJ would be good from the get go. Having met DJ once or twice, I think he'll make a pretty good coach, period. He's a good guy, but he can also be a fiery mean SOB when it's called for...and it just might be with our STs units. Hopefully he can bring some leadership to that group.

Kind of a odd combination isn't it? Defensive line and special teams? Maybe I can see the connection between kick coverage and defensive line, but what about kick protection and the actual coaching of the guys kicking the ball?

That is GREAT news! DJ was a heck of a player here and will do a fine job as ST coach....he already a pretty good DE coach.
Coach B is making all the right moves, IMO. We'll be just fine with FALCON FOOTBALL!

I am very excited to hear this news. I love the fire and intensity that DJ Durkin coaches with and this can only carry over to the special teams next season. The mere fact that there was a concerted effort to make changes in the staff to help shore up this area on the team speaks volumes. Plus, with the talented kickers we also have coming in along with many of the recruits Brandon has said may see playing time right away at least on special teams, this is a step in the right direction.

In all reality...who are we kidding...the guy can't screw up special teams any more than they were last year... I am happy that they are doing something, and its a good chance for him to show the BG world that D-Ends are a starting point!
