I'm interested to see what other people think of Mel Kiper Jr.

He is a journalist not a scout. He collects information and restates it and organizes it and makes judgments based off of it. Nothing more nothing less. He is very very good at that.

I would pay him and Steve Lavin to fight in the wilderness like adult rams during mating season. The sheen would be visible for miles.

Mel Kiper is a scout before he's a journalist. He scouts players. In the mid-80's he was even offered a scouting job by an NFL team and I believe he did it for a short time. If he were just a journalist, he wouldn't be able to publish his draft reports because they basically would be plaigarism. I hate when people that don't know what they're talking about go and label Mel Kiper and shortchange what he really does.

Your point about hte book is a good one, But come draft time he is more journalist than scout. His ratings change with what he hears not wha he sees. That is a Journalist.
Do you really hate when people claim that about Kiper? How often do people do that that you can actually have an emotion for it. i mean do you walk around and your mom is like, "honey how are you and Mel Kiper is not a scout he is a Journalist...."

He's a journalist about as much as you're a comedian. Actually use some draft forums a little bit and you'll see some of the garbage that is said about him. He pioneered the draft and made it the spectacle it is today. Everyone that enjoys it or covers owes a debt of gratitude to him. And you show me one person whose rankings do not change.

I agree with your statement about Mel and the draft. He helped to turn it into what it was today because he was on ESPN at the time that it got interesting.
However anyones whose rankings change based not on what they see but how anyone else is judging players is a journalist in that aspect.

I really think Mel is a combination journalist/analyst. Although I think he more favors the journalistic side, personally. I talked with somebody that was at the Senior bowl and they said that Mel was there for like 1 practice all week long. Most of what he bases his opinions on, IMO, is what he's hearing from NFL teams.

But in actuality you don't really know what he does, so you shouldn't comment. It just makes you ignorant. And probably why he wasn't physically on the field for most practices is because he was up in a booth broadcasting most of them on ESPN.

Please explain this better. You're saying that he wasn't on the field because he was broadcasting up in a booth for ESPN? Radio? TV? Please let me know more about Kiper.

You seem to be awfully defensive when somebody says anything negative about Mel Kiper Jr. Are you Mel Kiper Sophomore?
