Spring Preview 2006
The 20 big questions ... 1-3

By Pete Fiutak

Spring ball has already begun with North Texas kicking off its off-season sessions on February 13th and with Texas, Auburn and UCLA starting soon. Here are twenty questions heading into this important time to keep you going during this brutally painful time before March Madness.
- Spring Questions 14-20 | Questions 7-13 | Questions 4-6

3. Ten things to watch for this spring
10. Bowling Green QB Anthony Turner
Is Turner ready? He struggled when Omar Jacobs was knocked out for a stretch last year, and now he has grow into the type of high-octane passer to keep the Falcon offense going. Anthony Glaud and Tyler Sheehan are big recruits who fit the mold, so Turner has to show this spring that the job is his. His development is one of the big keys to the MAC race.

9. Where are the Wisconsin running backs?
New running back coach John Settle has a lot of work to do. Brian Calhoun took off a year early for the NFL, Booker Stanley was kicked off the team and feature back-in-waiting P.J. Hill was also booted, at least for part of the off-season. Top recruit Lance Smith will eventually be the new Badger star, but for now, junior Dywon Rowan, who packs a load at 240 pounds, and sophomore Jamil Walker.

8. The California quarterback race
Jeff Tedford is hoarding quarterbacks with Steve Levy, Nate Longshore, Joe Ayoob and Kyle Reed all ready to get an equal shot at winning the starting gig. The winner will be keeping the seat warm until Kevin Riley matures next year. Whoever takes over the starting job will be in for a monster year. "

Who was that fat fullback that ran so well for Wisconsin? Matt Bernstein, I think. Hopefully, those fat guys don't run like him.

On an unrelated note. Having commented on your gun and hunting pictures, I feel that I must now turn my attention to the quote that you attribute to Plato. First, attributing the term "realist" to Plato is anachronistic. The quote is more commonly written as "Only the dead have seen the end of war." Either way, there is no textual evidence that Plato ever said (wrote) that quote (unless some evidence, of which I am unaware, has been found quite recently).

I believe the quote is accurate and accurately attributed. I think you are referring to Plato, the Greek philosopher while MAC is referring to Bob Plato who lives over on Peck Street in north Toledo. :D

There has been a lot of debate regarding the origin of the quote "Only the dead have seen the end of war". Douglas MacArthur's famous speech regarding Duty, Honor, and Country linked it to Plato back in the early 60's, but I don't think he really knows this Bob Plato cat over on Peck Street?

Here is a link to a story on why it was likely attributed to Plato:

have yet to read where it is not and here is another to keep you going

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

Not to turn this into a political rant, but do you know what is ugly? Not lettting Pat Tillman's family know the real truth of what exactly occured in his final moments. Just a shame. A guy who went in to fight and had to worry about his own personal safety from friendly fire.

Well, I was at the Wisconsin game last year, and I really don't think the RB's were the ones to thank for that game. Much like at Oklahoma the year before (Adrian Peterson), it was the work of the O-Line that got them the yards. Heck, with the holes that they were opening up against our D, I could've run for 40 yards. If you tell me that all of their OL is gone, then I'll be happy, but the RB's have it good against smaller DL's like ours. Jeff

Brian Calhoun was still nasty. He seemed like a pretty good guy based on his on field demeanor throughout the season too. I always have a soft spot for a guy who scores a TD and immediately hands the ball to the ref and returns to the sideline.

The offensive line was dominant, but Calhoun made guys miss at or behind the line of scrimmage at least a dozen times. There was a very noticeable drop-off when Booker "Jumpsuit" Stanley came in the game.

The most important Wisky offseason storyline is probably the recovery of Joe Thomas.

Lots of ugly stuff going on each day with the ongoing wars. Interesting that you chose to comment upon an ugly incident committed by our side as opposed to one committed by our enemies.

Did you not read the link above? There is no credible evidence that Plato ever said (wrote) that. I'll defer to Plato's texts or even a hack ancient biographer like Diogenes Laertius before I'll believe some 20th century general or some dude who decided to put a quote on a building.

If the Wisky line is as good this year as it was last year, they will be tough to stop. It doesn't matter whether it's Booker Stanely or Booker T & The MGs in the backfield.

With our new giant DT recruit DJ Young and the bulking up of Nick Davis and Brandon Curtis I hope soon we wont' be able to call our D-line small.

Its going to be a hell of a battle where by both sides this year, far more than last year have some important unanswered questions.
i am looking forward to it becasue it is FALCON FOOTBALL more than any other reason, and I will don my orange glasses when the season gets closer, but right now, in this moment I miss football. Football should have a spring season as well.
