Redd Vs. Cole

So Redd will be covering Cole in camp this coming fall. ahhahah I'd love to see that. Also, I went to practice the other day, and Aaron Davis is doing much better. I talked to Coach Z and he says they WR will come along, slowly but surley. AD is looking better, and looks like the best WR out there. Keep in mind he still cant catch the ball at ALL. However, his routes, releases, footwork, and hips are doing much better and look the best out of the group.

I have to say I'm not really encouraged if our best WR can't catch the ball....I'm pretty sure that's an important part of the job description.... Y'know...."reciever?"...

maybe they'd come along more quickly if they had better attitudes.

Unfortunately, you can only teach things like footwork, running routes, cutting, etc. However, I don't think you can teach someone to catch the football. Sure, you can give them pointers on catching with their hands and not their bodies, looking the ball into your hands, catching the back of the ball, etc. I think catching the ball in any sport is a go-given instinct that requires excellent hand-eye coordination. You either are born with it or you are not. Hopefully, Davis is not as bad at catching the ball as some lead us to believe.

you dont have to be a natural at catching the ball. That is definately a skill you can master with repetition. Spending hours on the jugs machine will defintely help. His big problem is that he is afraid of contact. Not blocking contact, he doesnt like to get hit when he isnt expecting it. Which is normal for a freshman. This is the same reason along with his attitude why Steve Sanders didnt play until is redshirt sophmore year. He was definately capable but he had problems focusing in on the ball when people were around him. But look how great Steve turned out. This is a small problem right now that will fix itself with time.

So this other freshman WR is supposed to be better than Partridge? I figured he would be our go-to guy at WR this season.

Just to be a nitpicker, this is NOT a small problem and it will NOT fix itself. A receiver not being able to catch the ball is a HUGE problem. But, as you point out, it is a problem that can be rectified. But, as you also point out, it does not fix itself, instead, it takes a focused effort.

I have to agree with '87...that is a bit disturbing to hear a receiver not being able to catch the ball. That would be like a kicker not being able to make FG's and....oh, forget that! That is, until BiG Bird gets here!!

There's a name for a receiver that can't catch the ball:

Defensive Back.
