Everyone says Northern now has the inside track, which I totally have to agree but I was wondering this question. Who wins the MAC is this is the scenerio.


Northern Wins out, Except against TURDLEDO.

TURDLEDO wins everygame, including beating Northern, but losing to Bowling Green.

Bowling Green would finish 9-2 overall, 1-2 OCC, 7-1 in the Conference. (5-1 in Div, 2-0 in other divsion).

So who would be conference champ?

Northern beat Bowling Green, but Toledo beat Northern and BG beat Toledo. Then it would go to the next tie breaker.

Next tie breaker would be Cross Divisional Games, each team is 2-0.

Next tie breaker would be OCC games, Northern and Toledo would be 1-2. BG 2-1, but only 1-1 against Div 1. Looks like the Temple game may be more significant than we thought!!!

Not sure if they still use OCC game though

This may be the year where it comes down to total points and total opponets points, and combines win/loss percentage of opponets and their opponets, very similar to the BCS standings.

Not me, because now I have a headache after reading this post. . wow.

I know I already posted it, but in 4 other posts people kept asking who would win, and what the tie breaker options are, so i thought I would post it again under a new heading. People keep saying they want Northern to lose some games, I hope they keep winning until they play Toledo and Toledo beats them, then BG beats Toledo. That is about the only way BG will win the West. I dont see Northern or Toledo each losing 2 games.

I thought we established that tie breaker will come down to the team that has waited the longest to go to a bowl game.

That's what I thought too. Plus, BG's OOC record is actually 2-1, not 1-2. We beat SEMO and Temple and lost to OU.

BG OCC is 2-1, thats what I have. 1-1 against Div-1. SEMO is not Div 1. And I dont think the tie breaker about the team who hasnt been a bowl game determines who plays in the Championship game. It used to be that way before we had the Championship game.

I looked throught the MAC Championship guiebook and no where did I see any reference to a) team longest removed from a bowl game or b) out of conference record being used to determine the representative in the championship game. There is a mysterious tie-breaker that says "Sport specific component, if applicable", but I could find no evidence that this existed for football. :shrug:

We did this already.

For divisional champs it shall be decided on conference winning percentage. If two or more teams are tied for the championship, they shall be considered divisional co-champions. The MAC tie-breaking formula shall be used to determine which team will represent that division in the MAC.

MAC tie-breaking formula:
a. Head-to-head competition. If the two teams played during the regular season, the winner of the game between the two teams shall represent the conference.
b. If the two teams did not play each other, compare the winning percentage of the two teams against common opponents in rank order until an advantage is gained and the tie is broken.
c. If there is still a tie after applying (a) and (b) above, the most recent team representing the conference in a bowl game shall be eliminated.
d. If the tie cannot be broken applying (a), (b) and (c) above, a committee consisting of athletics directors other than the directors of the tied teams involved shall select the ‘best representative.’

So bgsufan1972, in your senario it comes down to (c). And that means NIU goes to the MACC. And BG and TU would have to settle for co-divisional champs that don't get to play the MACC.

SO liek we said, NIU has to lose twice. The bowl game is nice, but Id rather win the West and play in the MACC game. the only way Id rather jsut have abowl game is if we play the suckeyes in the MCB. I want those no talent arse clowns so bad. We would cruch them with a sophmore QB. and the crying would come forth in buckets from columbus saying that we cheated or something.

Actually, the way I read it, it sounds like Toledo might go.

Toledo would have to beat Northern Ilinois to create a three-way tie.

In a three way tie, remove the most recent bowl team (BGSU).

Then what?

If they go back and look at (a) and (b) again to resolve the two-way tie, then Toledo would go by virtue of their win over NIU.

But if they stay at (c) and keep dumping teams in reverse chronological order of bowl appearance, then, yes, NIU would go. NIU last went to a bowl game in 1983.

Any sense of which way they would go? (d) seems to imply they would go back and review (a) (b) and (c) again before getting a committee of ADs together.

But I'm not sure it really means that.

Why don't they just go with the best overall record? That seems like the most logical way to do it. If there's a tie with THAT, THEN you can enter in how long its been since a team had a bowl appearance and crap like that

Best overall record is terrible for college football. There is too much of a discrepency in the level of talent each team plays. Why should we get an advantage over NIU because we played Temple when they played ISU & Maryland? ISU is no powerhouse, but they're a better team than Temple. Of course Maryland isn't quite as good as OU, but you get the point.

Especially in leagues like the MAC where everyone is trying to play against the big boys and prove they can win. Why punish teams for taking on that tough schedule?

Now, if they wanted to look at the BCS standings, the AP poll, the Sagarin ratings or something... that wouldn't bother me.
