Is Van the Man?

After Omar was injured last year, remember during the Kent St. game when Anthony Turner was injured and had to come out? I thought to myself, "Here comes Freddy Barnes and off goes his red shirt."

To my surprise, in comes Van Johnson. I had forgotten that he had practiced as a QB. This was a really smart move by Coach Brandon.

OK- what happens if Freddy Barnes gets injured in the Wisconsin game? Is Van the Man? Also, somewhere in the back of my mind is that we have a walk on QB on the roster.

I'd hate to take the red shirt off Sheehan or Glaud.

Salsa,

That walk on QB is Tony Hunter out of River View HS...he's from Coshocton, O. He played in the spring game. He might be an option so Sheehan and Glaud don't have to have the RS ripped off...

Johnson will be a SR this year.

I would love it if Glaud came in and took control of the team. I know Turner is good, but if Glaud is as good as I've been reading on-line we may have one that's even better.

I'd hate to see a red-shirt taken off Sheehan or Glaud as well. Let’s just hope it doesn’t come down to that. When Van filled in against Kent State last year, things got really shaky. I know he was an emergency back-up (our last option before likely burning Barnes’ red-shirt), but thankfully Turner came back in and we won. I think the thing Turner displayed most that game was his toughness – he took some hits in that game. He didn’t play a great game (and thankfully, neither did Kent State and they helped set us up with some great opportunities), but he helped find a way to get the win. Man was that an ugly game though. Our team looked like the Falcons of the late-1990s – early-2000s that day. But a win is a win and I’ll take one any day.

Maybe I look at things a bit differently....I'd actually LIKE to see one of the true frosh get some playing time THIS YEAR, if possible.....seems to me if AT had received some PT earlier (prior to the injury to Omar), it might've been a different story last season....it's great to play your #1 and build stats etc., but if he gets hurt (like Omar), then you're going to someone with NO experience at all under pressure. And if we didn't have TWO frosh QB's I might feel differently....but redshirting TWO QB's, assuming that Barnes STAYS at QB and doesn't switch to WR, doesn't make sense to me.

Good God.......

If we're placing our back-up qb hopes on Freddie Barnes or Van Johnson than Wisky will kill us even more than I think they could now. I think one of the incoming freshman qb's should be redshirted but not both. One of them has to be better than Van or Freddie. Both were more highly regarded. I don't know how much qb Barnes or Johnson have played but I don't think they played as much as Sheehan or Glaud. I'd say we keep the rs off the one of the freshman qb's that performs best in late summer practices.
