Athlon picks BG #103 nationally

Post by BGSU33 »

Athlon picked BG #103 nationally. I don't have the magazine here with me but I wrote down how they listed the MAC & BG's opponents. I do have Lindy's magazine here with me and I put their predictions in the "Lindy's" thread that includes a lot more information than what's listed here in this thread. But here are the Athlon picks:

4. Ohio State
26. Wisconsin
48. Norhtern Illinois
53. Toledo
76. Miami (Ohio)
88. Akron
92. Central Michigan
96. Ball State
100. Ohio
101. Western Michigan
103. Bowling Green
107. Eastern Michigan
114. Kent State
115. Florida International
117. Buffalo
119. Temple
GO BG!!!

There are so many things wrong with that list I'm not sure where to start. I guess being FIFTY spots below Toledo and below Ball State at all could get the ball rolling....

Being picked #103rd , its probably a good thing for your young group to have something to look forard to proving otherwise. I dont' know honostly where I'd rate our team at this point. With no solid entrenched qb right now and a new offensive tendency for this year , there a too many variables.

Coach Brandon should purchase that magazine, photocopy that section and tape it to every player's locker.

How quickly they forget where BG football is in the MAC pecking order after the fifth straight winning season post-Blackney and victories over 3 schools listed ahead just last year.

It's an absolute disgrace, and I'm glad you let me know before I wasted my money.

If this team needs a magazine to get motivated they aren't in the right place. Bulletin board fodder is nice, but I think the fact we haven't won the MAC in 14 years and have lost to Toledo twice should be motivation enough. I'm not sure where I'd rate us either, but to rate any progam in the 100s after 5 straight winning seasons with 2 bowl wins is laughable. I guess whatever guru made this list out figures any lowly mid-major that loses their best player must be up the creek. No respect, but I guess there is no use in acting surprised or mad about it anymore.

I don't think that we will be one of the worst 20 teams in college football this year, but I can certainly see why they ranked us at #103. We lost our quarterback, his two big WR targets and our all-everything RB and his backup. We lost two defensive captains and our two best DBs from last year. Those losses came from a team that went 6-5 with wins over Temple, Buffalo, and Kent State. Putting down the kool-aid and based on those losses alone, I can see how an outsider would rank us that low. I hope the guys can prove the "experts" wrong.

103???? That could be the most bogus thing I have ever seen in my life. We will blow that out of the water! Honestly I am surprised by Athlon ranking BG 103, they had us at 40 last year!
4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!

I think people are underestimating how bad we were last year in the eyes of most outsiders. We were 6-5, and got blown out in one national television game against a tough OOC opponent. If you look at our 6 wins 5 of them were against the absolute bottom feeders of D1A. Beating Ball State, Temple, OU, Kent, and Buffalo is not going to gain you much respect in the college football world.

We then lost the poster boy of that team in Omar, our top 2 WRs, our top 2 RBs, and our captains off the defense, along with all of our kickers.

Look at it from an outside, unbiased, perspective. How high do you expect them to rank us!? In the end, it doesn't matter what gets predicted, as we saw last year. The games are still going to be played on the field, and if we win we'll gain respect as the year goes on.

Beating Temple 70-7, and Miami 42-14 didnt look good to an unbiased party? I have to disagree and say that they are not putting the time and effort necessary to see how good or bad all these teams really are. They obviously just grade the "big" schools as best they can and then make guesses on the Mid-Majors. Just because we lost Omar doesnt mean this year is going to be terrible. He wasnt exactly our savior last year. I know he was hurt, but he didnt come to play at all against UB or Boise. Anyway I thought Akron would finish 2nd in the East last year even with losing Charlie Frye and they out did me. I think Athlon and others had Akron rated really low almost souly based on Fyre's exit. Its a shame they dont take a bit more time and throughly look at all the "little" schools as well. I think we would all be willing to wait the extra month or so before they came out with the predictions. I know I would!

Exactly -- so why are you or anybody else upset about what they think?

I don't expect every publication to rank BG as high as #63 like the Sporting News, but #103 is absurd.

I'm upset because what they are printing isn't right, and a lot of people are going to pick up that magazine and say "wow they suck" when we really don't!

It's a fair point, but I don't really think magazines' preseason rankings really mean anything to anyone once the season starts. They're just meant to stir the pot in the offseason, and it seems they're doing a fine job of that.

I'll agree that 103 seems too low for us. I would probably put us somewhere in the 80-90 range. I could see us winning the MAC and ending up with 8 or 9 wins and I could see us winning only 3 or 4. Really tough team to get a read on this year.
