Meeting a Former BG player at the Akron Zoo...

Post by Falconfreak90 »

Yesterday, we took the Freaklings to the Akron Zoo and I have to say they have done a tremendous job with the Zoo. It has really improved from the days when it contained a robin and 2 squirrels.

Anyhow, we were standing at the Snow Leopard exhibit and there was a gentleman standing a few feet from me wearing a BGSU Falcons hat. I had on one of my BG Football shirts cuz I finally decided that if Buckeye fans are gonna wear their gear every day of the year, by golly I'm gonna sport the orange and brown every day.
I walked up to this guy and told him I liked his hat. He smiled, thanked me and said he liked my shirt. He asked me if I ever played for BG....which I told him I did but only in my dreams. He said he played for BG back in the early 60's. I introduced myself and he did the same...his name is Willis Jones and he played offensive tackle for BG on the 1961 and 1962 MAC Title teams. We ended up talking for about 15 minutes about Doyt Perry, the Mercy Bowl vs Fresno State, other players from that era and the teams of the last few years. Willis will be at the Wisky game and I hope to see him at many games in the future. I could have talked with him all day but he needed to catch up with his family. I thanked him for his time and congratulated him on the titles he won as a member of the team. I think he lives in the Akron area.

Class of 61, do you remember Willis Jones?

When I got home I grabbed last year's media guide and, sure enough, there he was in the team photos and index. #75, Willis Jones.

A very cool thing meeting Mr. Jones!

Completely semi-unrelated, but I just got the alumni mailer about the Cleveland game this weekend, and part of the postgame "official" festivities is a party at House of Blues, featuring music by Paul Miles, the only player to have his number retired by BG football. What a cool idea!

Sweet zoo story, too, Freak! :D

Honestly, Mike, I really don't....but you know how it is with us "old guys"; can't remember last week (in this particular situation, I sure DO!- Catch the connection?) I'll have to check out my yearbook and see if I recognize him by sight.

Sure!

Friday 8pm - BG Happy Hour at the Winking Lizard (hosted by Cleveland Alumni Chapter)

Saturday 11am - The Great Tailgate at Cleveland Browns Stadium - $25 per person - Located in "The Barking Lot" (North Enclosure), entry fee includes standard tailgating fare, giveaways, cash bar, University updates, photos with Freddie and Frieda and incredible Falcon fun. (As a personal note, I'd stick with tailgating with the rest of us. )

1pm - There's a game or something. :-D

6:30pm - End Zone party at the House of Blues - $20 per person - Enjoy cocktails (cash bar) and hors d'oeuvers and LIVE music from BGSU alumnus Paul Miles of Detroit.

There was also information about hotels that have rooms reserved for BG alumni/fans at the Marriott at Key Center (team hotel) and the Renaissance Clev. Hotel. Both are at $139/night, reservations can be made by calling 800-228-9290 for either hotel.

It says more information is at bgsualumni.com, but I didn't see anything. The alumni phone number is 888-839-2586

Seriously, he really asked you if you ever played?

You must have spent the off-season getting really "ripped"!

Must have been all of the shoulder presses using the grill.

Yeah, he did. I started laughing a bit! Told him I played 4th grade thru high school but wasn't nearly good enough to play at the 1-A level...not even close, in reality. I probably could have played Div 3 or NAIA but that's about it.
Maybe all the Tae Bo, weight lifting and pushups I'm doing is paying off. I still have 4 years eligibility left. :-D

Coach Brandon-"Freak, I want you to line up across from Kory Lichtensteiger and show me what you can do".

Freak-"Ummmm....do you really think that's a good idea???"

Anybody paying $25 for admission to a party that includes a cash bar needs to have their head examined. Come on down to the Muni and we'll get ya drunk for free...just bring a package of dogs & buns :)

When it comes to tailgaiting, it's probably ok to trust Hammb's judgement. It other matters, I would be more hesitant.

Okay, not ALL of his judgement, but as far as where to start, he's golden... where he ends up is a different matter entirely.

But totally agreed about not paying $25 plus likely inflated beer prices when there's a much better time to be had a few lots over.
