BG’s future non-conference opponents

I know we haven’t even started the 2006 season yet, but it’s never too early to think about anything BG-related, especially in football. We know we are scheduled to host Boise State and Florida International next season (2007), but I was wondering if anyone has heard any rumors or has any info about any potential opponents for the two openings on our schedule next year? And before the Michigan jokes start up again, they could actually be a possibility for next year with the Big Ten/MAC scheduling agreements that are ongoing now. I know we have Minnesota coming to BG in 2008, so I would imagine it’s highly likely we’ll be playing at a Big Ten school next season for at least one of those games.

Here’s what I can gather from what has been posted, reported and rumored so far:

2007
Sept. 15 - FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL
Sept. 29 - BOISE STATE
TBA - TBA
TBA - TBA

2008
Sept. 6 - MINNESOTA
Sept. 13 - @ Pittsburgh
Sept. 20 - @ Wyoming
Sept. 27 - @ Boise State

2009
Sept. 3 - @ Missouri
Oct. 3 - WYOMING

2010
TBA - @ Ohio State

Great start. I'm guessing a Big 10 roadie for one spot.

OK, I'll be the first to say it - THREE OOC road games? Not cool.

I'm not sure we're still on the sked to play Ohio State in 2010. I think I read somewhere that wasn't going to happen now. I could be wrong. Anyone know for sure?

Well, personally, I'm rooting for road games with Rutgers, Navy and Maryland, but then again, I'm pretty selfish when it comes to Falcon football.

:P

2008 we got a problem

In 2008 we are suppose to play Virgina Tech. The game is scheduled for August 30th. The other teams were slated to play are Minnesota which is home, and away to Pittsburgh on September 13th and Bosie St. which is TBA as of now. I believe in a previous forum, word was that the Wyoming series has been cancelled due to schedule conflicts. Here is the link on the latest info of BGSU football scheduling.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I remembered reading that the Virginia Tech game in 2008 was cancelled and that the Wyoming series (2008 & 2009) was back up and runing for BG, which would replace the VT game in 2008. I remember it panning out something like that because there was a lot of talk of BG making consecutive trips out West because of it. Personally, I’d much rather have a home-and-home with Wyoming than a one-game deal with Virginia Tech myself. But who knows for sure, these future schedules seem to change like the weather. Heck, up until about a couple months ago, we had Bosie State coming to BG this year, now it's next season. We'll see, but I love finding out who and when we are playing teams for planning, budgeting a trip, travel arrangements, etc.

As for Ohio State in 2010 not being on the schedule any longer, that could be.

Shouldn't Boise St be coming back here in 2009?? Why should we go out there twice and they only come to BG once? It was a 2 and 2 deal I thought.

Warthog = Schedulemesiter :D

Looks like we'd be in line for another Big 10 road trip n 2007.

You would think, but I believe we are getting screwed on this one. No way should we be doing a 2 for 1 with another mid-major. It was originally a one for one with games in 2005 and 2006. Then last fall it was announced that two more games, 2007 and 2008, were added to the schedule. But this Spring, in order to help out the MAC, we agreed to move our home game with Boise to 2007 and then make a trip out there in 2008. No mention of a 2009 game back at the Doyt was made. I would have to say that the lack of announcement concerning a 2009 game means that it isn't going to happen. :x

If that's the case, it's another example of harmful overscheduling that puts the team behind the eight ball before conference play begins.

The rule of thumb for the 3 OOC games should be one you're expected to win, one that could go either way and one where you're the underdog. Matching up with Big 10 teams on the road and that buzzsaw out in Idaho known as Boise State on a regular basis is not my idea of a balanced OOC that puts the team in a realistic position to succeed.

It's been documented that Brandon cares about the MAC schedule infinitely more than the OOC, so why overextend the team during this period?

Now I know nationalchamps.net is not completely accurate, but they have Boise already playing Oregon, @ Toledo, and Miami (Redhawks) in 2009. I seriously doubt they want a third MAC team on their schedule. And fwiw, they have UT and MU in 2010 as well.

Joe: Agreed. With four OOC games now the norm (with the advent of the "permanent" 12-game schedule), that changes somewhat. I've gone back and forth on what I'd prefer to see, and here's where I'm at:

1 road game with a big-name, BCS school, a la Ohio State, Oklahoma, etc.
1 road game that could go either way, a la Boise State, Memphis, etc.
1 home game that could go either way or with a mid-tier BSC conference school (Mizzou, etc.)
1 home game that can be penciled in as a win and, yes, I've come around to believe that playing a I-AA home game is A-OK to fill that need.
