Hey Transfer
do you mind if I use your quote? I'm writing a letter to the Mobile Newspaper and would like to use your quote. I won't use your handle. Actaully, here's my letter: Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
First off, great job GMAC Bowl and Jerry Silverstein. The move to Sunday January 7th is one that will have a positive impact on Mobile and those visiting our city. When I first heard the news that the bowl game was moving, I instantly logged on the miamihawktalk.com (University of Miami), ay-ziggy-zoomba.com (Bowling Green State University) and ncaabbs.com (MAC Conference) to tell our past GMAC Bowl guests the good news. Before the inaugural GMAC Bowl, I made it a point to visit the two teams' message boards and help them out with their stay in Mobile. Many had never been to Mobile and were very curious. As I posted and they responded, one issue kept coming up. The midweek kickoff, right before Christmas wasn't feasible for many fans, especially if you're traveling from Toledo, OH. This was unfortunate, because I could tell how excited these fans and students were to be invited to a bowl. Today, just a few moments after posting "GMAC Bowl= Jan. 7" I received many positive replies. "Mobile in January right before school starts? I love it!" one member replied. "Hopefully we'll be bowling in January" another replied. What it all boils down to is the convenience of traveling to Mobile on a Friday and spending the weekend in our great city. In the past, fans would do their best to make it to town on Tuesday to stand along empty parade routes to watch the parade, then head to the river where a few hundred people danced to "The Tip Tops". After the pep-rally and fireworks put some energy in to our guests from the North, they headed downtown to a sparse Dauphin Street crowd. The crowd after the bowl game is usually less crowded. With the game falling on a Sunday, visitors can actually party and do it with the people who make this bowl happen; US. Can you imagine what our guests will think when they head downtown Saturday afternoon for the parade and they see over 100,000 Mobilians on the parade routes, on balconies and hopefully in bars? What will they think when Toledo, Bowling Green, Memphis or Southern Miss flags are all over downtown? It's going to be a true atmosphere. A JANUARY bowl atmosphere! No longer are we wedged between the New Orleans/Lafayette Bowl and Pioneer Pure Vision Las Vegas Bowl. Don't think it's a typo when you see the GMAC Bowl listed in the same sentence as the Rose, Fiesta, Orange and Sugar Bowls. That's right, Mobile's Bowl is right up there with the big boys and apparently the folks who put on the GMAC Bowl are too. Let's take advantage of this new date and really show our guests a good time.

Very nice, I hope we can get back to Mobile and more that missed out last time can come down. We had a great time in the few days we spent there. The people are outgoing and friendly and everyone talks about the game. It is truly a city that backs and gets behind their bowl game. The Brick Pit was unbelievable as well.

MACMAN
Well...
I must say. this is one Bowl Change I like. Not because I like the number of Bowls, or agree with the discriminatory system in place by the BCS.
But I like the move from DEC to Jan...it is smart.
I would only add that I think we should just add "National Championship" to it just as the BCS did to a game with ZERO factuallity to it.
But this is pleasing.

I am going to take the other side of this argument. I think January 7th has the potential for this to be anticlimactic. The BCS Bowls will have ended and most people are moving on other things. Then, a MAC vs. Conference USA bowl comes along? We as die-hard fans of the MAC don’t have a problem with it, but I don’t know about the rest of the country. I am not sure this will do anything for TV ratings.
Personally, I liked the Christmas time bowl game. We all have vacation time and can travel to the game more easily. Or, were home and able to build our day and evening around the game. Being in the middle of Bowl season was appealing to me. It was bowl season. After the last BCS bowl game I kind of focus on the NFL playoffs.
Plus, do you realize we won’t play a game for two months leading up to the bowl game now? I know it helps with injuries healing, but how does that make a team sharp?

I am kinda in agreement with Rollo. I think this will hurt television ratings quite a bit. In the past the bowl has been part of bowl season when every college football fan tunes into ESPN every night knowing that there will be a new, exciting bowl game to watch. That season culminates with the BCS games, and then college football season is over. There won't be that many fans that are aware there is a bowl game AFTER the BCS games.
On top of that, they put the game on a SUNDAY!?!?! Were they on crack? Put a midmajor bowl game on the first Sunday of the NFL playoffs? It may make for a better atmosphere for those in attendance, but that's just retarded from a TV revenue standpoint. Honestly, I'm hoping BG doesn't make it to the GMAC bowl so that I don't have to worry about it conflicting with the NFL playoffs...go to the Motor City Bowl so that we can watch without missing the NFL.
As somebody who is as fanatical about the NFL as I am college ball I just cannot see how this is a wise move.

Well then, I stand correctedPGY Tiercel wrote:Why yes it does.orangeandbrown wrote:Doesn't the article say that it doesn't conflict with the NFL game?
"While two NFL wild-card playoff games will be played during the day on Jan. 7, the GMAC Bowl will have no competition when it kicks off just after 7 p.m."
