Atlanta's Freddie that is. Is this the gayest falcon you've ever seen or is it just me?

I'll reserve judgment on sexuality until MACMAN chimes in.

At least he didn't run over a back-up QB while driving a golf cart. Man, I bet the guy who did that will be fired pretty quickly down in New Orleans.

As a student of language...when did the term "gay" become interchangeable with "odd" or "stupid". The word was co-opted by homosexuals and lesbians when I was a kid and for as long as I can remember it had a very specific meaning (which depending on your POV was good, bad or value neutral).

When did this shift occur that made the term less specific and entirely pejorative?

As long as I can remember (late 80's), my little retarded friends and I used the word gay with absolutely no connotation of homosexuality.

"Do you want to play kickball?"

"No, kickball's gay. Let's play football."

And "gay" became interchangable with "odd" or "stupid" about 15 minutes later.

I think it's unfortunate that, in 2006, people are still using the word "gay" this way.

It's insulting to some among us and it really, really bothers me every time I see it on this board.

I've been tempted to delete these uses of the word, but that would mean a pissing match I'm not sure I'm ready for.

I will say this:

It seems that some among us are completely comfortable with the fact that there are gay and lesbian Americans trying to live their lives to the fullest just as the rest of us are trying live our lives to the fullest.

It seems that others would say they "hate the sin but love the sinner."

From either point of view, I'm not sure how someone can justify "gay" as a metaphor for "odd" or "stupid."

Twenty years ago? It was a different era.

But today?

How is that loving the sinner?
