Position Changes
Position Changes
From Tuesday's Blade:
Hargrove has moved to LB. Mahone is playing Safety. Terrel White is now playing Middle LB, Haneline is #1 on the weak side. Dozier is starting on the strong side. Vincent Corner is playing corner, not RB.
Brigss is questionable for the Wisconsin game. Thomas James and Jacob Hardwick are competing for the starting position. Freshman WR Zach Charles will "probably" play this fall.
Coach Nehlen watched practice yesterday.

Wow is all I can say. The S to LB transition sure is occuring alot lately (Will Myles, Loren Hargrove, Erique Dozier, . We currently have 0 experience at safety. Two likely Freshman Starters in Sanderson and Mahone.
The two deep at the DB spots.....
CB Lewis-Brown
CB Smith-Johnson
FS Sanderson-Wright
SS Mahone/Wiley
2 true Freshman playing in the two deep here as we move our only safety with any experience to a very deep LB group.......
At RB we are very thin.
Macon and then Thomas and Winovich? Who is the scat back type that Bobby Thomas was suppossed to be?
A player named Curtis Van Demark is on the roster. I think he is a walk on?
I expected Corner to not be redshirted at RB because we needed a shifty guy. I guess I was wrong.

We have Chris Bullock at RB, I think he will be the #2 behind Macon and impress a lot of people early on. These changes are crazy, I gotta go back and fix my roster on NCAA 07 before I start my new dynasty!

BGSUFootballFan: Good point about Bullock. He came here with a fair amount of hype. Should be a good one.
A trio of Macon, Bullock and Winovich (with Macon the workhorse) should be do the trick.
Van Denmark is listed as a RS-Sophomore. I don't think I've ever even heard his name before. But according to these statistics, it looks like he played for Marist (D I-AA) in 2005. He didn't play much, though, logging time in only eight of 11 games. His stats: 17 carries, 29 yards; 1 rec. for 1 yard. He's listed as 6-2, 215, which is great size, but ...
BTW, I see Macon is listed as #5 on the roster.

Thanks 87 alum. I think Macon is going to be something special, and look for Bullock and Winovich to back him up just fine. I'm really glad coach Brandon didnt panic and bring someone over from defense to fill the void of Bobby Thomas, because it already looks like Bullock can do that. Yes, Winovich did get moved, but that was already decided and he has spent more time on offense anyway. I also like that he is best friends with Macon and that they seem to love to work together on just about anything. Surely that bond will show up out on the football field. As for Van Denmark, I have never heard of him. Sounds like more of a country than a football player, but good lord he is really big for a RB. Its a shame he couldnt play LB because I dont think Dozier and Hargrove are going to be able to last all season especially playing right at or under 200lbs! Yes, Dan Macon is #5 which is my favorite number in the entire world not just for football! Which #5 do think he'll be more like, Josh Harris or REGGIE BUSH?

I am very excited about Dan Macon, but he is still relatively unproven. Winovich and Bullock have 0 carries between the two. If Demark is on schollie and is a player they expect to contribute than ignore the rest of what I write..
I am surprised Corner got moved because what we seem to lack is a second dangerous scat back type. We seem to have one potential do-it-all very special back in Macon. An H-Back type in Winovich. A Bruiser in Bullock.
This offense relies heavily on a pass receiving RB. What happens if Macon gets injured for a game or 2? We have two bruisers and nothing else.
I actually expected Corner not to be redshirted in order to get some PT at RB as some sort of pass catcher out of the backfield.
My question to the coaches is if Macon is injured who catches passes out of the backfield? I would bet they have an answer. I just want to hear it.

Van demark logged significant time during the spring game. He was neither remarkable not horrible. Being as he is third/fourth on the depth chart, I don't see this as an issue. We wouldn't be completely lost if he was forced to play.

Also dont forget that the coaches have mentioned Barnes stepping over to RB if the injury plague hits us again.

If PJ Mahone has dislodged Loren Hargrove, he must be having a heck of a camp. I don't mind seeing Corner at DB at all. We're fine at RB with Macon et al and Corner gives us more speed in the defenisve backfield.
I think we're going to need Zach Charles to play this fall or we're going to be a tad slow at WR.

I think Mahone is going to be a stud in the defensive backfield, thats why I started that whole new thread for him. I also agree that it was a good move to put Corner at corner. We dont have much depth there, and as bad as Van Johnson was at times last year at covering, I could see him overtaking him and getting some playing time in our nickel and dime defensive packages!

If I recall correctly, PJ played safety in the Ohio high school all star game, and he looked darn good. I believe he even had an interception in the endzone if I'm not mistaken.
Even if I'm wrong, from what I've seen of him, that kid should be All-MAC no matter where he is on the field. Heck of an athlete for sure.

This discussion of moving Corner to CB and the apparent lack of depth at RB makes me wonder about Jahmal Brown. I think he had solid running stats at Cleveland Benedictine and the highlights were pretty nice, but is he going to end up as the odd man out in the young defensive secondary? Could he potentially be headed for a position change or does the coaching staff like the load of young DB depth?

I think the coaches will keep Brown at CB. Right now he is the #3 CB behind Smith and Lewis so he should get significant playing time, especially against teams who go 3 wide or more. Which brings up the question of Corner, and I think he will beat out Van Johnson as the #4 CB if not go ahead of Brown and make it as the #3 CB. I think you'll see Van become that odd man out, unless the coaches want to use him and redshirt Corner or Brown, but I dont see that likely as Brandon has never been one to redshirt DB's in general.

Great point. I forgot that. i think I am just used to the embarrassment of riches we have had at the RB spot the last few years. We could also peel likley redshirts off of Derek Brighton or Tyrone Pronty both who I beleive played some RB in HS and would likely be more ready to play the RB spot than Corner at this point.BGSUFootballFan wrote:Also dont forget that the coaches have mentioned Barnes stepping over to RB if the injury plague hits us again.
